At the very end of Wednesday night\u2019s episode, \u201cDarkest Hour \/ Wake Thy Power,\u201d the show effectively confirmed that Locke is indeed playing who the vast majority of fans had agreed was the most likely candidate: Wiccan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore that reveal, a great deal happens in a bracingly short amount of time. Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) is possessed by the ghost of her mother, Evanora (Kate Forbes), during a Witches\u2019 Road trial that evokes 1980s teen horror movies. When Alice (Ali Ahn), newly liberated from her family curse, uses her magic to free Agatha from the possession, Agatha begins draining all of Alice\u2019s powers. The only thing that stops Agatha is when Locke\u2019s character \u2014\u00a0still referred to in the credits as \u201cTeen\u201d \u2014\u00a0yells out the name of Agatha\u2019s dead child, Nicholas Scratch, and she hears a child\u2019s voice say, \u201cMama! Stop!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s too late for poor Alice, alas: Agatha drained her to death. Teen is devastated, and lashes out at Agatha, who protests \u2014 with seeming sincerity \u2014 that she couldn\u2019t control her ability to drain Alice\u2019s powers. Teen is unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou wanted her power,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s what this has always been about for you, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBefore Agatha can reply, Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) answers for her: \u201cOf course it is. That\u2019s what all of this is about \u2014 for any of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSo that\u2019s what it means to be a witch?\u201d Teen says back to Agatha. \u201cKilling people to serve your own agenda? No. Not for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTeen\u2019s righteousness shifts Agatha\u2019s entire demeanor. She seems to regard Teen with a new sense of understanding, and chuckles to herself with a wicked smirk before leaning in close to him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou\u2019re so much like your mother,\u201d she says, like it\u2019s an accusation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a way, it is: As Marvel fans and astute viewers will have surmised by this point, Agatha is referring to Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, who created her sons Billy and Tommy in \u201cWandaVision\u201d out of magic, only for them to disappear from existence when Wanda had to give up her fantasy world. Agatha has clearly concluded that, somehow, Billy \u2014 who as a kid demonstrated a facility for magic, like his mother \u2014 has returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUnfortunately for Agatha, she\u2019s right. Teen\u2019s hands begin to spark with pale blue magic, which commands Jennifer and Lilia (Patti LuPone) to grab Agatha and throw her into the muck just outside the Witches\u2019 Road. Agatha is quickly sucked underneath; in a flash of anger, Teen plunges Jennifer and Lilia into the muck as well. But while \u201cDarkest Hour \/ Wake Thy Power\u201d does resolve the biggest mystery of the show, it also conjures a whole slew of new, beguiling questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPrior to this moment, Teen\/Billy behaved as if he had no innate magical ability at all. Was this just a ruse? Or did Agatha, by evoking Wanda, awaken something within him? Was Billy the one who placed the sigil that prevented the other witches from knowing his real identity \u2014 and if not, who did? Was Billy already aware of who his mother really is, or is this revelation as much a surprise to him as it is for his (now submerged) coven? How <em>did<\/em> Billy come back from nothingness? Did Billy\u2019s brother Tommy also return? Do Billy\u2019s parents \u2014\u00a0Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan (Paul Adelstein and Maria Dizzia) \u2014 know who he really is? Also, where the heck is Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza)?!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAgatha All Along\u201d will likely answer many of these questions in its final four episodes. In the comics, Billy\u2019s origins are tangled up in some seriously weird magical metaphysics: When Wanda created him, she may \u2014 or may not! \u2014\u00a0have inadvertently used a fragment of the soul of Mephisto, Marvel\u2019s version of the devil. After Billy\u2019s body passes into oblivion \u2014 which may, or may not, have been Mephisto\u2019s doing \u2014 his soul basically attached itself to another random kid. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never quite dabbled in anything this abstruse, and since alternate versions of Billy were introduced in 2022\u2019s \u201cDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,\u201d the show may instead opt for a more multiversal explanation of this Billy\u2019s resurrection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhere Billy came from, however, seems much less important than the fact that he\u2019s returned at all. Even a cursory search of social media demonstrates that, although most hardcore fans had already figured out Teen\u2019s identity, it\u2019s still been thrilling to have it validated by the show. While the MCU has started to incorporate genuine LGBTQ representation over the last few years, Billy is something new: A queer superhero who is central to their project and integral to the ongoing MCU storyline (unlike with Phastos from \u201cEternals\u201d and Korg from \u201cThor: Love and Thunder\u201d); whose sexuality isn\u2019t just a conduit for profane comedy (unlike with Deadpool); and whose LGBTQ identity isn\u2019t referenced so obscurely that it barely exists (unlike with America from \u201cMultiverse of Madness\u201d and Valkyrie from \u201cThor: Ragnarok\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn other words, Billy is a powerful and consequential Marvel character who also happens to be unmistakably gay.
