It&#8217;s not clear how these accounts allowed hackers access to customer data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fidelity has not revealed what specific customer data was accessed by thieves, but said after concluding its investigation that no customer accounts or funds were compromised in the breach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We detected this activity on August 19 and immediately took steps to terminate the access,&#8221; Fidelity said in a notification letter to customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fidelity declined to provide further comment on the breach, but told CNET in an email that it has resources in place to assist customers with questions about the attack.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fidelity takes its responsibility to serve customers and safeguard information seriously,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/personal-finance\/identity-theft\/data-breach-exposes-social-security-numbers-of-237000-comcast-customers-heres-what-we-know\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers of 237,000 Comcast Customers<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What to do if you&#8217;re included in the Fidelity breach?<\/h2>\n<p>The Fidelity data breach affects a small percentage of the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fidelity.com\/about-fidelity\/our-company#:~:text=We%20help%2051.5%20million%20individuals,with%20innovative%20investment%20and%20technology\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-regularLink\">51.5 million customers<\/a>. If you were affected, Fidelity is offering 24 months of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/personal-finance\/credit-cards\/advice\/best-credit-monitoring-services\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">credit monitoring<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/personal-finance\/identity-theft\/best-identity-theft-protection\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">identity theft protection <\/a>services from TransUnion Interactive. To activate this offer, use the code provided in your letter sent via USPS mail. Identity theft protection can help notify you of data breaches in advance and alert you if your personal data has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/personal-finance\/identity-theft\/5-signs-your-personal-data-is-on-the-dark-web-and-what-you-can-do-about-it\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">found on the dark web<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to taking advantage of this free service, you should change your password and monitor your Fidelity account for any suspicious activity. If you have a Fidelity account and aren&#8217;t sure if you were affected, changing your password is always a good idea. Regularly updating your password can make it harder for bad actors to hack into your account.
