An elliptical storm with inky swirls of burnt orange and dulled copper, it is longer than the Earth is wide, and its winds screech through the tops of the planet\u2019s clouds at 400 miles per hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The spot may seem like an unchanging fixture from a distance. But scientists have now discovered that it is jiggling and changing shape, repeatedly elongating and then contracting as it circumnavigates Jupiter\u2019s southern hemisphere like a bright red kickball bouncing through a schoolyard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Astronomers say that the Great Red Spot hasn\u2019t always looked as it does today. But finding that it was able to transform during a 90-day period of observation came as a shock. \u201cWe were very surprised,\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/science.gsfc.nasa.gov\/sci\/bio\/amy.a.simon\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Amy Simon<\/a>, a planetary astronomer at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center and an author of a study published this week in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/PSJ\/ad71d1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Planetary Science Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While it\u2019s possible to see something ball-like in the locomotion of the Great Red Spot, some scientists see a living creature. The storm \u201cbehaves like a slug, contracting and stretching as it moves around the planet,\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/meteorology\/people\/james-odonoghue\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">James O\u2019Donoghue<\/a>, a planetary astronomer at the University of Reading in England who wasn\u2019t involved with the study. \u201cIt\u2019s a Great Red Slug.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Whatever one thinks it mimics, astronomers have no clue as to why the spot is behaving this way. \u201cIt is a mystery how this process works in terms of the underlying physics,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Donoghue said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Great Red Spot, which rotates counterclockwise, has been continuously observed for the last 150 years.
