{"id":112860,"date":"2024-10-11T09:29:56","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T02:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=112860"},"modified":"2024-10-11T09:29:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-11T02:29:56","slug":"solar-storm-bombarding-earth-now-may-reach-extreme-levels-sparking-auroras-down-to-alabama-and-straining-hurricane-weakened-power-grids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=112860","title":{"rendered":"Solar storm bombarding Earth now may reach &#8216;extreme&#8217; levels, sparking auroras down to Alabama and straining hurricane-weakened power grids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>A severe solar storm sparked by an intense flare from the sun could reach &#8220;extreme&#8221; levels as it bombards Earth, officials with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned on Thursday (Oct. 10).<\/p>\n<p>Scientists with NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Prediction Group (SWPC) said that a cloud of charged solar material, called a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\">coronal mass ejection<\/a>, slammed into Earth around midday, triggering a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/severe-solar-storm-geomagnetic-storm-auroras-power-grids-october-10-11-2024\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/severe-solar-storm-geomagnetic-storm-auroras-power-grids-october-10-11-2024\">&#8220;severe&#8221; geomagnetic storm<\/a> that could impact power grids and GPS and radio communications systems, as well as amplify aurora displays in regions that typically don&#8217;t see them.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;When skies are clear, the aurora (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\">northern lights<\/a>) could be visible as far south as Alabama and northern California tonight,&#8221; SWPC officials <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/g4-severe-geomagnetic-storming-observed-0\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/g4-severe-geomagnetic-storming-observed-0\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in an update<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The coronal mass ejection, or CME, from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\">the sun<\/a> reached Earth at 11:17 a.m. EDT (1517 GMT) and triggered a severe G4-class geomagnetic storm by 12:57 p.m. EDT (1657 GMT), SWPC officials said in an update. And it may not be done yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is still a possibility that we could reach G5 (Extreme) levels,&#8221; SWPC officials wrote in the update, adding that the solar storm will continue into Friday (Oct. 11).<\/p>\n<p>Of particular concern are the potential impacts to infrastructure on Earth, which can be affected by radio blackouts and other interference associated with severe geomagnetic storms. In that May event, a series of massive solar flares sent multiple CMEs toward Earth, triggering spectacular northern lights displays as far south as Alabama. Similar effects on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\">auroras<\/a> were possible for the current storm, SWPC officials said in an Oct. 9 press conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CME that triggered Thursday&#8217;s G4 geomagnetic storm was associated with an X1.8-class solar flare that erupted from the sun. That flare is one of several X-class flares that the sun has unleashed in the last week, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/most-powerful-solar-flare-this-solar-cycle-x-9-earth-firing-line\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/most-powerful-solar-flare-this-solar-cycle-x-9-earth-firing-line\">including a massive X9 flare<\/a> on Oct. 3.
