A dozen more people who came from out-of-state<strong> <\/strong>were trapped at the bottom of the 1,000-foot-deep mine for about six hours before being rescued Thursday night.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm241n8es000m3b6mhm4u8adh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI am relieved that 12 of the people trapped in the Mollie Kathleen Mine have been safely rescued. Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual lost in this incident,\u201d Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement Thursday night.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x2knx000k3b6mzpzj2zkq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among those rescued, two were children and four were seen by medical personnel for minor injuries, according to Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, who did not provide details on the fatality.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x2knx000l3b6mgvcfi4cv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At around noon Thursday, the mine experienced a mechanical issue with its elevator system, causing \u201ca severe danger for the participants,\u201d Mikesell said during a news conference. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x2knx000m3b6mdg7wa3ib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the dozen people trapped faced cold temperatures around 50 degrees, they had water, blankets, chairs and a radio. Facilities like restrooms,\u00a0however, weren\u2019t available underground, according to the tour website.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm242cvgq00103b6mfyngfepn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are thrilled to hear all 12 people who were still inside the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine have been safely rescued,\u201d the Colorado Springs Fire Department<strong> <\/strong>said in a social media post Thursday night. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful for the work of all first responders who ensured the safety of those still inside. Our condolences go out to the family who lost a loved one tonight, please keep them in your prayers.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm242nuyb00133b6mxmoyl5wt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The body of the deceased person had been recovered when the first group was brought up an elevator after being stuck halfway at 500 feet, according to Mikesell.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm244c340001p3b6mwhyy3lwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To rescue the last group, inspectors\u00a0worked to\u00a0ensure\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0elevator\u00a0was going\u00a0to\u00a0work\u00a0properly so that they could bring them up on it, Mikesell said. They\u00a0brought them\u00a0up\u00a0four\u00a0at\u00a0a\u00a0time, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm243ew9a00183b6mek3ws8g2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe did have a briefing with them to explain to them what was happeing because they were in this tunnel and didn\u2019t know that any of this was going on,\u201d Mikesell said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x2knx000r3b6m37pxbhcw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mine last experienced an accident in 1986, and it has been operating as a family-owned tourist attraction for \u201cwell over 50 years,\u201d Mikesell said. In that accident, two people were trapped in an elevator, but no fatalities were reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23zbjux00003b6mmvks2tmp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The one-hour tour \u2013 an entirely\u00a0underground experience that takes guests through the 1890s\u2019 gold mine \u2013 \u201cis not claustrophobic but, the descent in the shaft is very close for 2 minutes (each way),\u201d the tour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldminetours.com\/need-to-know.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> states. The elevator moves at a speed of about 5 mph.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm242ybce00153b6m6odbzosh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After going down the elevator, guests take a short ride on an underground rail car, then continue on foot for a quarter mile of flat and level walking and are shown how gold mining worked, according to the website. Guests are provided hard\u00a0hats and are told to leave personal items like walkers and wheelchairs behind during the tour.
