Russian troops have made steady but incremental gains in recent months in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, U.S. officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is a style of warfare that Russians have likened to being put into a meat grinder, with commanding officers seemingly willing to send many thousands of infantry soldiers to die.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s kind of the Russian way of war in that they continue to throw mass into the problem,\u201d a senior U.S. military official said this week, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal assessments, in announcing the Pentagon\u2019s latest Russian casualty estimate. \u201cAnd I think we\u2019ll continue to see high losses on the Ukrainian side.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to U.S. assessments, Russian casualties in the war so far number<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>as many as 615,000 \u2014 115,000 Russians killed and 500,000 wounded. Ukrainian officials have zealously guarded their casualty figures, even from the Americans, but a U.S. official estimated that Ukraine had suffered a bit more than half of Russia\u2019s casualties, or more than 57,500 killed and 250,000 wounded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The official did not specify the number of Russian casualties last month beyond calling it the costliest month for Moscow\u2019s forces.
