Their house was essentially untouched, he said, but it was too hot to sit inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt\u2019s nicer out here,\u201d he said as the rolling waves crashed ashore and seagulls squawked overhead.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Their trip to the beach underscores a small wave of possible good fortune for Sarasota County after the storm: Many of the area&#8217;s 35 miles of pristine beaches, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarasotacountyparks.com\/parks-and-facilities\/discover-a-park\/type-of-park\/beaches\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">visited by 6.5 million tourists<\/a> from around the U.S., may have escaped Milton&#8217;s blow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Initial observations [show] public beach parks including Siesta Beach appear to have not been substantially impacted,&#8221; county spokesperson Genevieve Judge told USA TODAY. And while there are still many pieces to be picked up &#8211; such as the remains of the roof of Tropicana Field, home to Major League Baseball&#8217;s Tampa Bay Rays &#8211; there&#8217;s solace for residents in knowing that some of Florida&#8217;s most beloved attractions weren&#8217;t destroyed.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Two weeks ago, several beaches were &#8220;substantially impacted&#8221; by Hurricane Helene, Judge said, including North Jetty Park, Turtle Beach Park and Caspersen Park.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">Many areas hit hard<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Across Florida, the storm left roads flooded, trees unrooted and structures destroyed. Footage from local television stations and photos shared on social media showed part of the stadium\u2019s roof torn off amid high winds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">St. Petersburg Fire Rescue told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/live-updates\/milton-forecast-hurricane-tracker\/?id=114553995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">ABC News<\/a>\u00a0that authorities were in contact with people inside the stadium and confirmed they were safe.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcactionnews.com\/news\/local-news\/the-roof-of-tropicana-field-was-ripped-off-by-hurricane-miltons-winds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">WFTS-TV<\/a>\u00a0reported there were no injuries.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">ZooTampa animals safe after sheltering overnight<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">ZooTampa staff moved around 350 animals to hurricane shelters and a storm &#8220;ride-out team&#8221; stayed at the zoo overnight Wednesday, Tiffany Burns, ZooTampa\u2019s senior director of animal programs told USA TODAY Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In total, the 1,000 animals at the Tampa zoo were safe Thursday, with many having stayed overnight in their usual night houses. But the zoo is without power and &#8220;sustained some damage&#8221; from high winds, spokesperson Sandra Torres told USA TODAY.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Overnight Wednesday, the zoo\u2019s six orangutans shared their night house with birds they had never seen before, said Burns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The \u201cvery intelligent, very intuitive\u201d orangutans were fascinated by being around their new neighbors and some of their \u201cdifferent personalities\u201d came out as a result, Burns said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Burns told USA TODAY Thursday morning everyone \u2013 human and animal \u2013 at the zoo is safe after what was \u201ca very long night\u201d for the ride-out team.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">World-famous marine lab hit<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, which has facilities located on the Anna Maria City Pier, was directly hit by Milton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The aquarium had been closed since late September, when it began preparing for potential damage from Hurricane Helene, which hit Florida on Sept. 27.
