You\u2019re going to have a mess on your hands.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio00083b6mosdi22jv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He claimed Harris \u201cdestroyed\u201d San Francisco, and later added, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to let her do that to this country. We\u2019re not gonna let it happen.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio00093b6mwzd38m93@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump also compared the largest city in the battleground state to a developing nation while speaking, accusing China of abusing its developing nation status in international trade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000a3b6mf6aojtv0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re a developing nation too. Just take a look at Detroit,\u201d he said, calling the city a \u201cdeveloping area \u2026 hell of a lot more than most places in China.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000b3b6muh86tw3a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Detroit remains severely reduced in size and economic strength from its early 20th century heyday, its recovery from bankruptcy proceedings in 2013 and the continued growth of the city\u2019s downtown area is a point of pride for Detroiters and many leaders in Michigan. On the day that Trump was speaking in the city, thousands of fans were flocking to Detroit for a playoff baseball game and the opening game of the season for the Detroit Red Wings. The city grew in population for the first time since 1957 between July 2022 and July 2023, the city government <a href=\"https:\/\/detroitmi.gov\/news\/detroit-grows-population-first-time-decades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced earlier this year<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000c3b6mt0tq14yf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has a history of insulting urban centers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/28\/politics\/baltimore-response-trump-tweets\/index.html\">around the country<\/a>, including in states he needs to win to return to the White House. Similarly to his comments about San Francisco, he sparked controversy earlier this year for telling House Republicans that Milwaukee, a major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/18\/politics\/donald-trump-wisconsin-election\/index.html\">city in Wisconsin, is \u201chorrible,\u201d<\/a> when speaking about crime and election concerns. He later<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/18\/politics\/donald-trump-milwaukee-racine\/index.html\"> assured Wisconsin voters \u201cI love Milwaukee\u201d <\/a>and said he chose the city to host the Republican National Convention.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2411l4a00003b6mgznf6vz7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Harris alluded to those previous remarks when she criticized Trump for his statement later Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2412a2400023b6m994x8mdb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy opponent, Donald Trump, yet again, has trashed another great American city when he was in Detroit, which is just a further piece of evidence on a very long list of why he is unfit to be President of the United States,\u201d Harris told reporters in Las Vegas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000d3b6mkjnwrbm0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During his remarks to the Detroit Economic Club, Trump said he wants the \u201ctriumph of the American auto industry\u201d to be among his \u201cgreatest legacies,\u201d and promised a \u201crebirth\u201d of Detroit if he\u2019s elected after laying out how he plans to bolster the US auto industry and manufacturing, including a proposal to make interest paid on car loans fully tax deductible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000e3b6mfnjupfp9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m telling you right now, standing here in the center of this once-great city, that by the end of my term the entire world will be talking about the Michigan miracle, and the stunning rebirth of Detroit, that\u2019s going to happen,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000f3b6mids3py8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump said he\u2019s been \u201creading about Detroit for so many years, that it\u2019s coming around. It\u2019s coming around and never really got there.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000g3b6msq9uj4u5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you make the auto industry bigger, better, stronger, you don\u2019t have to worry about Detroit. It\u2019ll be very good. It\u2019ll come back soon,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000h3b6m89mg7xiu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            President Joe Biden defeated Trump in 2020 by more than 30 points in Wayne County, which includes the city of Detroit. Trump is trying to make inroads this year in blue areas, hoping to cut down Democratic margins and peel away votes from constituencies like Black and Arab Americans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000i3b6mapj25c11@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            City leaders and Democrats from around the state leapt to Detroit\u2019s defense after Trump\u2019s comments were reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000j3b6m86q8evxp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan defended the city\u2019s resurgence, noting that Detroit hosted the NFL Draft and has seen a decline in violent crime and increase in population in recent years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000k3b6mgfvcu6hw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLots of cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all without Trump\u2019s help,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000l3b6mex12uikx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes said Trump \u201calways has something nasty to say about places where you find a lot of hard-working Black folks.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000m3b6mn34l0yj1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut whatever Donald thinks, we\u2019re proud to be a city that bounces back, no matter what gets thrown at us. And we\u2019ll be proud to be the place that shows this guy the door,\u201d she said, alluding to Michigan\u2019s key electoral role as a battleground state.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24so48r00003b6mxuc0hcw8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris\u2019 vice-presidential pick, plans to go after Trump for his remarks in a speech on Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24sqb7m00073b6mgl3dv5hj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMaybe if he ever spent any time in the Midwest, he\u2019d know Detroit is experiencing a great American comeback. Crime is down. The city is growing. Factories are opening again. But all these guys know about manufacturing is how to manufacture bulls\u2013t,\u201d Walz is expected to say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000n3b6mbrt326i6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A spokesperson for the Trump campaign in Michigan said the former president \u201cremembers when Detroit was lauded as the gold standard for auto manufacturing success and revolutionized the industry\u201d and highlighted how the city has \u201csuffered from globalist policies championed by Kamala Harris that have shipped manufacturing overseas.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000o3b6mr3iv9bmb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs President Trump emphasized in his speech, his policies will usher in a new era of economic success and stability for Detroit, helping the city reach its fullest potential,\u201d said Trump Michigan Communications Director Victoria LaCivita in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm23x8uio000p3b6m7j81bds2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Republican vice presidential candidate Sen.
