{"id":113111,"date":"2024-10-12T01:00:49","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T18:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=113111"},"modified":"2024-10-12T01:00:49","modified_gmt":"2024-10-11T18:00:49","slug":"i-have-the-same-rare-vampire-condition-as-dracula-garlic-can-kill-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=113111","title":{"rendered":"I have the same rare &#8216;vampire&#8217; condition as Dracula \u2014 garlic can kill me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>She\u2019s the real-life Count Dracula.<\/p>\n<p>A woman\u2019s rare \u201cvampire disease\u201d causes her to writhe in pain and could even be fatal if she ingests garlic, much like the mythical bloodsucking creatures.<\/p>\n<p>Phoenix Nightingale, 32, has what is called \u201cacute intermittent porphyria,\u201d a very rare metabolic disorder that results in symptoms like pain, migraines, constipation and vomiting for days at a time if triggered.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for the Minnesota woman, her condition is triggered by an allergy to sulfur, which is found in garlic and could even result in a \u201cfatal attack\u201d if she ingests too much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople call it the vampire disease,\u201d she told Jam Press.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The metabolic disorder is often referred to as the \u201cvampire disease,\u201d Nightingale said. <span class=\"credit\">Jam Press<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The real-life Count Dracula, Vlad III, is suspected to have had the disorder, which inspired the fable of vampires who hate garlic and are sunlight averse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt comes from the legend about them needing to avoid garlic, having to stay out of the sun, looking pale and having receding teeth,\u201d Nightingale explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeurological side effects can make people think that those with the condition must have been monsters or are possessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><figcaption>Nightingale struggled to get a diagnosis for her condition for three decades. <span class=\"credit\">Jam Press<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cI\u2019m very careful about what I put in my body. I avoid a lot of food. I stick to the food that I know is safe. I can\u2019t even take most medications,\u201d she said. <span class=\"credit\">Jam Press<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The mom-of-two is forced to avoid any foods containing sulfur, as eating it in \u201chigh amounts or over an extended period could be fatal.\u201d Symptoms, she added, can \u201ccome out of nowhere\u201d or start to set in weeks ahead of an attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very careful about what I put in my body. I avoid a lot of food. I stick to the food that I know is safe. I can\u2019t even take most medications,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t eaten garlic since I was diagnosed.\u00a0I could never eat garlic bread. It could send me into an attack,\u201d she continued, describing her \u201clife-threatening\u201d attacks as two-day bouts of vomiting, sometimes 60 times over the course of an attack, and the potential for breathing difficulties.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The condition makes it difficult for her to eat out at restaurants due to unknown ingredients that could contain garlic. <span class=\"credit\">Jam Press<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The attacks can land her in the hospital and could be \u201clife-threatening.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Jam Press<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nightingale said that she\u2019s experienced over 480 attacks over the course of her life as she searched her answers, desperate for a diagnosis that only came last year. The pain, she added, can\u2019t even be remedied by prescription drugs, insisting that it is worse than giving birth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had one attack where I didn\u2019t go to hospital and it went on for 40 hours. It was non-stop vomiting, losing consciousness, screaming and crying,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve pushed out two children and it\u2019s worse than childbirth. It\u2019s agony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This makes dining at restaurants particularly challenging since garlic is a popular ingredient in many cuisines and she also avoids red grapes, soy, alcohol and coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I go out for dinner, unless it\u2019s a place I know, I look at a menu and I cry because I don\u2019t know what I can eat and prefer to stick with my safe foods,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cI\u2019ve pushed out two children and it\u2019s worse than childbirth. It\u2019s agony,\u201d she said. <span class=\"credit\">Jam Press<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She\u2019s sharing her diagnosis publicly in the hopes of spreading awareness about the condition to anyone who might be struggling to find a diagnosis for their symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took 31 years to get diagnosed and I had to pay out of pocket and spend years running analytics on it,\u201d she said, adding that she had to take matters \u201cinto my own hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard as a diagnosed person not being able to find a doctor who can help.
