Among those is proper nutrition, which experts agree is paramount to prevention.<\/p>\n<p>While no foolproof plan or single ingredient guarantees cancer prevention, every bit \u2014 and in some cases every bite \u2014 helps. <\/p>\n<p>Read on to learn more about six simple food swaps that can lower your cancer risk.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opt for healthy, fiber-rich carbohydrates <\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lentils are naturally rich in fiber. <span class=\"credit\">monticellllo \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Eat like your life depends on it. <span class=\"credit\">Liliya Trott \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFiber is my favorite nutrient for cancer prevention,\u201d Carrie Daniel-MacDougall, a cancer epidemiologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7081386\/foods-to-reduce-cancer-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently told TIME<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10255454\/#:~:text=Nonetheless%2C%20our%20findings%20indicate%20that%20a%20high,ovarian%2C%20renal%20cell%2C%20prostate%2C%20and%20pancreatic%20cancers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research has proposed<\/a>\u00a0that a high intake of dietary fiber can lower the risk of several types of cancer, including esophageal, gastric, colon and rectal. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/education\/increasing-fiber-intake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The American Heart Association recommends<\/a>\u00a0getting between at least 25 and 30 grams of fiber a day \u2014 though most Americans only consume around 15 grams daily.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/longevity.stanford.edu\/lifestyle\/2024\/04\/08\/what-is-fiber-and-why-is-it-important-for-the-microbiome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fiber is said to \u201cfeed\u201d healthy gut bacteria<\/a>,\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/publications\/focused-on-health\/how-fiber-helps-lower-your-cancer-risk.h11-1590624.html#:~:text=That%20means%20vegetables%2C%20fruit%20and,may%20reduce%20your%20cancer%20risk.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and experts suggest<\/a>\u00a0that fruits such as oranges and apples, whole grains,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/16\/lifestyle\/pumpkin-seeds-are-the-healthiest-seeds-to-eat-dietitians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuts and seeds<\/a>\u00a0can lower\u00a0<\/span>cancer risk.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel-MacDougall urges people to forgo ultra-processed, low-fiber carbs like instant oatmeal and pita bread for whole, high-fiber foods like beans, lentils and other legumes. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prioritize lean meat and plant-based protein<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Salmon is rich in vitamin D and omega-3s <span class=\"credit\">bit24 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aicr.org\/cancer-prevention\/recommendations\/limit-consumption-of-red-and-processed-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Consuming more than 18 ounces of red meat<\/a>\u00a0per week has been associated with increased odds of colorectal cancer. <\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s nutrient-rich,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/06\/lifestyle\/nutrition-experts-reveal-4-foods-to-avoid-to-lower-cancer-risk\/\">red meat contains heme iron<\/a>, which can facilitate the production\u00a0of potentially carcinogenic chemicals. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Daniel-MacDougall says ultra-processed deli meats and some meat substitutes, made with a laundry list of chemicals and additives, can be even worse. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey add all kinds of creepy stuff that may affect gut health and inflammation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization\u2019s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified processed meat as \u201ccarcinogenic to humans\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.who.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/pr240_E.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in 2015<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.who.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Monographs-QA_Vol114.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noting that there is<\/a>\u00a0\u201csufficient evidence from epidemiological studies that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The IARC also declared red meat as \u201cprobably carcinogenic to humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway? Cut out the cold cuts and the red meat and opt instead for chicken or fish, particularly salmon and other oily options rich in vitamin D and omega-3s. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image like broiling and grilling can produce carcinogenic compounds. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eat a medley of fruit and veg<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the most powerful anti-cancer foods include dark leafy greens,\u00a0cruciferous vegetables, mushrooms, berries, and unpeeled apples,\u201d Dr. Amber Orman, a radiation oncologist and board-certified lifestyle medicine specialist for AdventHealth in Orlando, Florida, previously <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/09\/13\/the-cancer-prevention-diet-6-smart-tips-from-a-nutritionist-on-what-to-eat-and-why-and-what-to-avoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told snack attack and pay it forward with your health, experts recommend munching on nuts and dried fruit. <\/p>\n<p>Walnuts, in particular, are anti-inflammatory and rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/10\/lifestyle\/omega-3-algae-supplements-may-help-ease-acne-study\/\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to their anti-cancer properties, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/28\/lifestyle\/drinking-alcohol-is-linked-to-six-types-of-cancer-experts-say-its-toxic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no safe amount of alcohol<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>According to the Cancer Progress Report 2024 from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), more than 5% of all cancer cases are caused by drinking alcohol. <\/p>\n<p>In terms of soda, and as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/08\/a-sugary-drink-a-day-significantly-raises-liver-cancer-risk-study\/\">The Post previously reported<\/a>, older women who drink just one sugar-sweetened beverage a day have a \u201csignificantly higher\u201d risk of developing liver cancer and dying from chronic liver disease.<\/p>\n<p>And diet soda drinkers are sippables with a wealth of health benefits.
