This world, designated GJ 9827 d, is around twice\u00a0<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17638-how-big-is-earth.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17638-how-big-is-earth.html\" rel=\"noopener\">the size of Earth,<\/a>\u00a0three times more massive than our planet, and has an atmosphere almost entirely composed of water vapor.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;This is the first time we&#8217;re ever seeing something like this,&#8221; team member and former University of Michigan undergraduate student Eshan Raul, currently at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/jwst-finds-first-exotic-steam-world-shrouded-in-water-vapor\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/jwst-finds-first-exotic-steam-world-shrouded-in-water-vapor\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;The planet appears to be made mostly of hot water vapor, making it something we&#8217;re calling a &#8216;steam world.&#8217; To be clear, this planet isn&#8217;t hospitable to at least the types of life that we&#8217;re familiar with on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\">Earth<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers have long speculated that &#8220;steam worlds&#8221; like GJ 9827 d could exist, but this is the first time such an exoplanet has been observed.<\/p>\n<p>As Raul points out, this planet is unlikely to support life, at least as we understand it, but it could help astronomers study other small exoplanets between the size of Earth and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\">Neptune<\/a> that <em>are<\/em> habitable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-tess-record-breaking-three-star-system-tightly-packed\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-tess-record-breaking-three-star-system-tightly-packed\"><strong>NASA&#8217;s exoplanet hunter TESS spots a record-breaking 3-star system<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"i-see-right-through-you-3\">I see right through you!<\/h2>\n<p>The study team, led by Caroline Piaulet-Ghorayeb\u00a0from the University of Montr\u00e9al&#8217;s Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets,\u00a0discovered GJ 9827 d&#8217;s steamy nature using a technique called &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29976-new-method-finds-best-exoplanet-candidates.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29976-new-method-finds-best-exoplanet-candidates.html\">transmission spectroscopy<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Transmission spectroscopy is based on the fact that elements and the chemicals they make up absorb and emit light at characteristic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-the-electromagnetic-spectrum\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-the-electromagnetic-spectrum\">electromagnetic wavelengths<\/a>. When light from a star shines through the atmosphere of a planet, the elements in that atmosphere absorb certain wavelengths, leaving &#8220;gaps&#8221; in the light spectrum. These gaps are the &#8220;fingerprints&#8221; of specific elements and molecules in that atmosphere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-wF4dtbTdbrd26TPt67nYpG\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-wF4dtbTdbrd26TPt67nYpG slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thus far, the majority of exoplanets that astronomers have investigated using this method have possessed atmospheres dominated by the universe&#8217;s two lightest and most common elements, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36327-why-is-hydrogen-the-most-common-element.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/36327-why-is-hydrogen-the-most-common-element.html\">hydrogen<\/a> and helium. The exoplanet is located just 5.2 million miles (8.4 million kilometers) from its host star, GJ 9827, which is around 6% of the distance between Earth and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\">the sun<\/a>. That proximity means GJ 9827 d completes an orbit in just over six Earth days. It is the third of three known exoplanets found around this star.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> found the first tantalizing hints of water vapor in the atmosphere of GJ 9827 d. The sensitivity of JWST and its Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) instrument allowed the study team to discover that this exoplanet doesn&#8217;t just have <em>hints<\/em> of water vapor; it is metaphorically drowning in it!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a very surreal moment,&#8221; said Raul. &#8220;We were searching specifically for water worlds because it was hypothesized that they could exist.
