They also agree that reviving it may be the only way out of Israel\u2019s widening war to its north.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe outcome that we want to see is the full implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701,\u201d the State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, told reporters on Monday, speaking of Israel\u2019s continuing assault in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Miller said that would mean the withdrawal of Hezbollah forces from the Israel-Lebanon border, and the deployment of U.N. and Lebanese army forces into the buffer zone in southern Lebanon that the resolution had sought to create.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701 in August 2006 as part of a cease-fire that ended Israel\u2019s last war with Lebanon. The resolution called for \u201can area free of any armed personnel, assets and weapons other than those of\u201d Lebanon\u2019s government and a U.N. peacekeeping force in the area known as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/10\/world\/middleeast\/unifil-un-peacekeepers-lebanon.html\" title=\"\">the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon<\/a>, or UNIFIL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent days, the question of how to restore that resolution has consumed senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Amos Hochstein, a senior White House national security aide who has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/10\/us\/politics\/amos-hochstein-lebanon-israel-biden.html\" title=\"\">working for months to broker an agreement<\/a> between Israel and Hezbollah to restore calm along the Israel-Lebanon border.
