Now, researchers from NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California suggest a similar object may orbit a Saturn-size gas giant <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17738-exoplanets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17738-exoplanets.html\"><u>exoplanet<\/u><\/a> named WASP-49 b, located 635 light-years from Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A sodium cloud detected in the vicinity of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/volcanic-exomoon-around-exoplanet-wasp-49b.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/volcanic-exomoon-around-exoplanet-wasp-49b.html\"><u>WASP-49 b<\/u><\/a> hints at the presence of a natural satellite, also known as an exomoon. While earlier studies have identified multiple <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/exomoon-discovery-scientists-debate-kepler-hubble-study\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/exomoon-discovery-scientists-debate-kepler-hubble-study\"><u>exomoon candidates<\/u><\/a> \u2014 including one <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/volcanic-exomoon-around-exoplanet-wasp-49b.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/volcanic-exomoon-around-exoplanet-wasp-49b.html\"><u>potentially orbiting WASP-49 b<\/u><\/a> \u2014 the existence of an exomoon has yet to be confirmed. Scientists doubt proposed detection of the 1st exomoons<\/strong><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, using the European Southern Observatory&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\"><u>Very Large Telescope<\/u><\/a> in Chile, the researchers found that the cloud around WASP-49 b is located high above the planet&#8217;s atmosphere, much like the cloud of gas that Io produces around Jupiter.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the cloud&#8217;s high sodium content and sudden changes in size further indicate it is a separate body orbiting the planet. Both WASP-49 b and its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\"><u>star<\/u><\/a> are composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with only trace amounts of sodium. Meanwhile, the cloud appears to be coming from a source that is producing roughly 220,000 pounds (100,000 kilograms) of sodium per second, according to the statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-EXERv2fzTGtrqmNJ44DUKo\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-EXERv2fzTGtrqmNJ44DUKo slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On two separate occasions, researchers also observed sudden increases in the size of the cloud when it was not next to the planet, meaning it is being refueled by another source. The cloud also appears to move faster than the planet, further suggesting it is generated by another body \u2014 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/exomoon-candidate-kepler-1708-discovery\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/exomoon-candidate-kepler-1708-discovery\"><u>possibly an exomoon<\/u><\/a> \u2014 moving independently and faster than WASP-49 b.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think this is a really critical piece of evidence,&#8221; Apurva Oza, lead author of the study and a staff scientist at the California Institute of Technology, which manages JPL, said in the statement. &#8220;The cloud is moving in the opposite direction that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/theory-of-everything-definition.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/theory-of-everything-definition.html\"><u>physics<\/u><\/a> tells us it should be going if it were part of the planet&#8217;s atmosphere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another piece of evidence suggesting the cloud is independent of WASP-49 b is that it does not align with the planet&#8217;s 2.8-Earth-day orbital cycle. Using computer models, the researchers show that the presence of an exomoon with an eight-hour orbit around the planet could explain the cloud&#8217;s irregularities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, further study is needed to confirm the cloud&#8217;s behavior.
