That&#8217;s what many people expected after the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/news\/americas-news-now\/inflation-cools-to-just-above-feds-target-prompting-rate-cut-expectations-economy-funding-2024-election-trump-harris-federal-reserve-car-rent-housing-groceries#\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/news\/americas-news-now\/inflation-cools-to-just-above-feds-target-prompting-rate-cut-expectations-economy-funding-2024-election-trump-harris-federal-reserve-car-rent-housing-groceries#\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve lowered rates<\/a> by 50 basis points last month, but that hasn&#8217;t been the case.<\/p>\n<p>The opposite has been happening with rates going up.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mortgagenewsdaily.com\/mortgage-rates\/30-year-fixed\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mortgagenewsdaily.com\/mortgage-rates\/30-year-fixed\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"noopener\">Mortgage Daily News<\/a>, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has jumped about 47 basis points since the Fed rate cut in September to right around 6.62%.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say a few reasons for this increase are because the 10-year yield, along with longer-term rates have both gone up.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What&#8217;s happening recently, I think has more to do with the jobs report last week. Generally when the economy&#8217;s strong, and it was a pretty strong job report, interest rates go up,&#8221; said Robert Van Order, a professor of finance &amp; economics at George Washington University.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another reason is the<a href=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/news\/americas-news-now\/cracks-in-strong-jobs-market-discouraged-workers-long-term-unemployed-on-the-rise-economy-labor-businesses-fed-rate-cuts-hiring-slows#\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/thenationaldesk.com\/news\/americas-news-now\/cracks-in-strong-jobs-market-discouraged-workers-long-term-unemployed-on-the-rise-economy-labor-businesses-fed-rate-cuts-hiring-slows#\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"noopener\"> recent jobs report,<\/a> which shows a strong economy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When the economy is strong there is a lot of borrowing and investing and that tends to get rates up,&#8221; said Van Order.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, market expectations are for two more rate cuts this year; each 25 basis points.
