One in eight new mothers will experience <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/27\/well\/mind\/postpartum-depression-mental-health.html\" title=\"\">postpartum depression<\/a>, with symptoms like extreme sadness, insomnia and social withdrawal that can emerge in the first year after giving birth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Postpartum psychosis is considerably rarer \u2014 it affects between <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/article-abstract\/209983\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one and two women per 1,000 births<\/a> worldwide. Some experts say the number may be higher, though, as women are often misdiagnosed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe consequences of missing a diagnosis of postpartum psychosis can be serious. Both the mom and children are at high risk of harm,\u201d said Wendy Davis, the executive director of the nonprofit Postpartum Support International.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7b1f69b7\">What is postpartum psychosis? And what are the signs?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The condition affects expecting or new mothers up to one year after they give birth.
