Eggshell colors don\u2019t indicate nutritional value<\/h2>\n<p>Eggs don\u2019t have more or less nutritional value depending on their shell color, Steele told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shell color is dictated by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breed <\/a>of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> the chicken<\/a>\u00a0that lays it,\u201d she said. \u201cDifferent chickens have different pigments that they apply on the eggshell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actual eggs themselves, she said, are \u201cpretty much the same\u201d nutritionally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Not all eggs need to be refrigerated<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While eggs that are purchased at a grocery store in the United States do have to be refrigerated, eggs have a natural defense against bacteria and moisture, Steele said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Eggs have a natural defense against bacteria. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cJust before an egg is laid, the hen puts an invisible covering on it called the bloom,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo now, at this point, the egg is vulnerable, and now it needs to be refrigerated \u2026 In Europe and a lot of other parts of the world, they just collect the eggs and leave them, and then they don\u2019t need to be refrigerated,\u201d Steele said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unwashed eggs, like ones from\u00a0backyard chickens\u00a0or small, non-commercial farms, do not have to be refrigerated, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is easy to tell if an egg is still fresh, Steele said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Simply pour a glass of water and drop in the egg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eggs that sink to the bottom and stay there are still good \u2014 but any \u201cfloaters\u201d should probably be tossed, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Know the truth about making deviled eggs<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Old eggs can lead to misshapen deviled eggs. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s a myth that older eggs are necessary when making\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deviled eggs,<\/a>\u00a0Steele said.<\/p>\n<p>While older eggs can be easier to peel, older eggs also contain much more air than newer eggs \u2013 which leads to a misshapen hard-boiled egg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Using older eggs for deviled eggs is \u201cthe worst advice,\u201d Steele said, \u201cbecause you do want a nice, egg-shaped egg.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead of hard-boiling eggs for deviled eggs, steam them, Steele said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI steam them in a steamer basket over simmering water. Same amount of time. Then put them in ice water,\u201d she said. \u201cThat makes the shell come off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This will make the peeling process much easier, Steele said, even for brand-new eggs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve collected eggs, gone inside and cooked them, and they peel perfectly,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. There\u2019s a difference between \u2018cage-free\u2019 and \u2018pasture-raised\u2019<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cPasture-raised\u201d is the gold standard when it comes to eggs. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cCage-free\u201d and \u201cpasture-raised\u201d are not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re at the grocery store, if you look for pasture-raised eggs, that\u2019s really the gold standard,\u201d she said. \u201cCage-free has kind of become a buzzword that everybody looks for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just because a chicken is not raised in a cage does not mean it is being treated well, Steele said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re still in a huge warehouse,\u201d she said. \u201cSo you want \u2018pasture-raised.\u2019 You know that the chickens are out in the sun. They\u2019re enjoying life and the eggs are more nutritious.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chickens in a pasture, she said, are \u201crummaging around in the dirt and the grass and eating weeds.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The eggs from pasture-raised chickens have less cholesterol and more nutrients, Steele said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Eggs are not just for breakfast<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Eggs can be enjoyed at any time of day. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eggs are not only for breakfast. They can be eaten at any time of day, Steele said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEggs are really\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/healthy-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">good for you.<\/a>\u00a0They\u2019re a complete protein.
