The expedition was studying the Treasury after years of speculation that two tombs found below the left side of the monument in 2003 weren\u2019t the only secret underground chambers. But that theory had not been confirmed \u2014 until now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24ytdfe00063b6mbxi18elr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Creasman and his team performed ground-penetrating radar \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/remotesensing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remote sensing<\/a> technique that uses radar pulses to detect underground objects \u2014 earlier this year to see whether the physical features on the left, where the original tombs were found, matched those on the right. <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.acorjordan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/acor-newsletter-36-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The detections<\/a> revealed strong similarities among the two sides, and it was the proof they needed to receive permission from the Jordanian government to dig beneath the Treasury.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24ytdfe00073b6mr5mgsl52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At this point, Creasman contacted Josh Gates, host of Discovery Channel\u2019s \u201cExpedition Unknown.\u201d \u201cI think we\u2019ve got something,\u201d Creasman said he told the explorer over the phone.\u00a0<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24ytdfe00083b6mgy7p5u8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With a film crew, the team excavated the newly uncovered tomb in August. But the real surprise was what lay within the tomb. While many tombs uncovered within Petra are found empty or disturbed, the chamber was filled with complete skeletal remains and grave goods made from bronze, iron and ceramic. The intact burial found beneath the Treasury provides rare insight into the lives of the Nabataeans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhistory.org\/Kingdom_of_Nabatea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ancient Arabian nomads<\/a> whose desert kingdom thrived during fourth century BC to AD 106, Creasman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24ytdfe00093b6m2f4fti5m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is a hugely rare discovery \u2014 in the two centuries that Petra has been investigated by archaeologists, nothing like this has been found before,\u201d Gates said. \u201cEven in front of one of the most famous buildings in the world \u2026 there are still huge discoveries to be made.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24ytdfe000a3b6mabooypks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The significant finding may be the largest collection of human remains found in one place within Petra, according to researchers, and it was featured Wednesday on the season premiere of \u201cExpedition Unknown.\u201d (Discovery Channel is owned by CNN\u2019s parent company, Warner Bros. While experts have debated the Treasury\u2019s purpose for centuries, the most popular theory is that the monument serves as a mausoleum, although no skeletal remains have been found within the building itself, Gates said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24yu795000h3b6m9anqmgok@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Treasury receives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gstcouncil.org\/destination-assessment-petra-jordan\/#:~:text=It%20has%20been%20a%20UNESCO,reaching%20905%2C000%20visitors%20in%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of thousands of tourists a year<\/a>, and it has also been featured in several movies, most prominently as the site of the Holy Grail in the 1989 film \u201cIndiana Jones and the Last Crusade.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24yu795000i3b6mj8f4v5y7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the artifacts were several vessels, with one skeleton found clutching a ceramic chalice that resembled the shape of the Holy Grail. \u201cIt really was this awesome moment of history imitating art,\u201d Gates said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24yu795000j3b6mfqu0rf40@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The artifacts are extremely well-preserved, Creasman said. However, the human remains, while intact, are in more delicate shape than expected. Their condition may be a result of the humidity and seasonal floods in Petra as well as the porous sandstone surrounding the tomb that has entrapped moisture, he said. Some of the skeletons were found with mold.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24yu795000k3b6mkqofh6ty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Only a handful of tombs uncovered in Petra in the past several decades have been found with untouched burials, Creasman said. In literature, Nabataean society is often described as being more egalitarian, with the king more integrated with lower classes than leaders of other civilizations, Creasman said. So far, out of the Nabataean tombs found, there does not seem to be a huge difference between royal and regular burials, so it\u2019s difficult to say whether the recently discovered tombs below the Treasury were designed for royalty.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24yvyub000s3b6m9xhrhyak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers also suspect that many of the textiles and jewelry that are usually found in Nabataean burials, such as cloth wrappings and necklaces and other beads adorning the bodies, were lost due to the humidity and floodwaters seeping into the tomb, Gates said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm24yvyub000t3b6my9vrsypg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the researchers continue to study the skeletons, Creasman said they are hopeful more details will come to light about who the people were in life. Researchers would like<strong> <\/strong>to date the skeletons and artifacts as well as use extracted DNA to determine whether the dozen skeletons are related.
