Abrams, but one in particular \u201crestored her faith\u201d in the industry: Steven Spielberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSalda\u00f1a featured in Spielberg\u2019s 2004 comedy-drama \u201cThe Terminal\u201d alongside Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, which came right after her first big-budget role in \u201cPirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.\u201d Salda\u00f1a has been open about her experience on the set of \u201cPirates\u201d not being the best, and during a Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival on Saturday, she said it almost caused her to \u201ctip overboard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI knew with that experience the kind of people that I wanted to work with,\u201d Salda\u00f1a said of \u201cPirates.\u201d \u201cThe crew and the cast, they\u2019re 99% of the time super marvelous. But if the studio and the producers and the director, they\u2019re not leading with kindness and awareness and consideration, then that big of a production can become a really bad experience and you may tip overboard. And I kind of did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSpeaking to Entertainment Weekly about the experience in 2022, Salda\u00f1a said: \u201cI walked away not really having a good experience from it overall. I felt like I was lost in the trenches of it a great deal, and I just didn\u2019t feel like that was OK.\u201d Years later, producer <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/zoe-saldana-pirates-of-the-caribbean-producer-apologized-bad-set-experience-1235415125\/\">Jerry Bruckheimer personally apologized<\/a> to her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLuckily, she had \u201cThe Terminal\u201d lined up next. \u201cI worked with Steven Spielberg eight months later, and he restored my faith that big can also be great,\u201d Salda\u00f1a said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe remembered feeling \u201cso good and so safe\u201d on set and recalled how Spielberg would play music over the loudspeakers in between scenes to make sure everyone was \u201csynchronized and on the same page.\u201d That\u2019s how she discovered the work of Nino Rota, an Italian composer best known for scoring many of cinema great Federico Fellini\u2019s films. As she and Spielberg discussed Rota\u2019s work and its importance to filmmaking, the director told her something she\u2019s never forgotten: \u201cIn order for you to know where you are, you have to know where you came from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe \u201cAvatar\u201d and \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d star is currently making the press rounds for her new movie \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez.\u201d Directed by Jacques Audiard, the musical crime comedy tells the story of Emilia (Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n), a drug cartel leader who enlists Rita (Salda\u00f1a) to help her fake her death and undergo gender-affirming surgery. Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir and \u00c9dgar Ram\u00edrez also star in the film, which was selected by France as its submission for the international feature Oscar. It first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and Salda\u00f1a, Gasc\u00f3n, Gomez and Paz won the best actress award. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring an <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/festivals\/selena-gomez-emilia-perez-zoe-saldana-karla-sofia-gascon-cannes-1236009151\/\">interview with <em>Variety<\/em><\/a> at Cannes, Salda\u00f1a discussed the nerves she felt surrounding the musical element of the film, which features original songs by Camille and several dance numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI went through all my stages of paranoia \u2014 I was delirious and then I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t do it,\u2019 and then I was like, \u2018I think I\u2019m breaking through on something,\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSalda\u00f1a added that though it\u2019s an \u201cunconventional story,\u201d it\u2019s \u201cimportant to have stories like this.
