chain announced.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s CEO reported in an earnings call on Thursday held by Tokyo-based parent company Seven &amp; I Holdings that it\u2019s shuttering 444 \u201cunderperforming\u201d locations, citing inflation pressures, slowed traffic, a decline in cigarette sales and a shift in consumer appetites. <\/p>\n<p>The closures amount to 3% of the chain&#8217;s total of more than 13,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Seven &amp; I saw a 7.3% decline in traffic in August, following months of declines, and noted that low-income consumers are taking a \u201cmore prudent approach to consumption\u201d due to inflation, high interest rates and what it called a \u201cdeteriorating\u201d job climate.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" since 2019 \u2014 an 80-year low \u2014 according to the company, as customers seek alternative nicotine products <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/21\/nx-s1-5068090\/what-is-zyn-nicotine-pouches-fda\">such as Zyn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 7-Eleven said it plans to expand its fresh food and specialty foods are becoming more important,\u201d Joe DePinto, the CEO and president of 7-Eleven, said in the earnings call.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors known for having loyal fans of their food offerings have earned higher marks from consumers. Out of all U.S. convenience stores, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20241001864475\/en\/Wawa-Takes-First-Place-in-Inaugural-Convenience-Store-Study-ACSI-Data-Show\">East Coast-based chains Wawa and Sheetz ranked high in customer satisfaction<\/a>, according to a recent survey by the American Customer Satisfaction Index, while 7-Eleven scored below the industry average.<\/p>\n<p>7-Eleven said it&#8217;s shifting focus to invest in its higher-demand locations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Aligned with our long-term growth strategy, we continuously review and optimize our portfolio to deliver convenience where, when and how customers need it,\u201d 7-Eleven said in a statement shared with multiple outlets. \u201cAt the same time, we continue to open stores in areas where customers are looking for more convenience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The news of the closures come <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/22\/nx-s1-5084022\/canadian-company-alimentation-couche-tard-offers-to-buy-the-parent-of-7-eleven\">amid a bid from\u00a0Canadian company Alimentation Couche-Tard<\/a>, owner of Circle-K, to buy the 7-Eleven parent company.
