Trump, meanwhile, is at 46.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Harris, the Democrat, could be poised to flip one of Trump\u2019s key demographics: suburban voters.<\/p>\n<p>On October 10, the news agency Reuters and the market research poll Ipsos released a poll that showed Harris led her Republican rival 47 percent to 41 among suburbanites.<\/p>\n<p>But two days later, The New York Times and Siena College released a poll that indicated Harris could be slipping among Black voters. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration dubbed Milton \u201cone of the most intense hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And it was heading straight for Florida, the southernmost state in the contiguous United States.<\/p>\n<p>But as Florida braced for impact, politicians were preparing not just for lashing wind and storm surges but also a flood of disinformation.<\/p>\n<p>Swaths of the US South were still recovering from September\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/10\/11\/in-storm-battered-north-carolina-lives-and-elections-at-stake\">Hurricane Helene<\/a>, and in the weeks since, Trump had made a series of false claims, including that the Democrat-led federal government was \u201cgoing out of their way to not help people in Republican areas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On the night Milton made landfall, outgoing President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/10\/10\/biden-blasts-trump-over-misinformation-about-hurricanes-milton-and-helene\">slapped back<\/a>, using his White House remarks about the storm to blast Trump, his erstwhile political rival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last few weeks, there\u2019s been reckless and irresponsible and relentless promotion of disinformation and outright lies about what\u2019s going on,\u201d Biden said, calling the distortions \u201cun-American\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFormer President Trump has led this onslaught of lies,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Harris herself blasted Trump in remarks in Las Vegas. \u201cThis is not a time for people to play politics,\u201d she said, in reference to the Republican.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3242844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3242844\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3242844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/2024-10-07T183547Z_1063871200_RC2UFAAZ8N19_RTRMADP_3_USA-ELECTION-HARRIS-1728783325.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C433\" alt=\"Kamala Harris sits across from Alex Cooper at the studio for the Call Her Daddy podcast.\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3242844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris sits down with podcast host Alex Cooper [Call Her Daddy\/Handout via Reuters]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr\/>\n<h2 id=\"trump-and-harris-spar-with-mainstream-media\">Trump and Harris spar with mainstream media<\/h2>\n<p>Once criticised for failing to appear on the national media circuit, Harris zipped from one interview to the next at the start of this week, as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/10\/8\/harris-embarks-on-media-interview-blitz-as-polls-show-her-tied-with-trump\">recent media blitz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a stark contrast to the start of her campaign. After she announced her candidacy on July 21, Harris failed to appear in any major interview until late August.<\/p>\n<p>And even then, it was a joint interview with her running mate, Tim Walz. Her first solo interview came a couple of weeks later, on September 13, with a local TV station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>But in the past week, Harris has cranked up the frequency of her media appearances. In the space of two days, she appeared on the podcast Call Her Daddy, on the radio with The Howard Stern Show and on television with talk-show appearances on The View and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.<\/p>\n<p>And her prerecorded interview with the vaunted TV newsmagazine 60 Minutes also aired on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>That last interview was meant to be part of a pair: 60 Minutes had invited Donald Trump to sit down for a recording as well.<\/p>\n<p>But host Scott Pelley announced that the Trump team had pulled out of the agreed-upon interview, citing \u201cshifting explanations\u201d, including that the Republican might be fact-checked on air.<\/p>\n<p>The friction between Trump and 60 Minutes did not end there. When a teaser version of the Harris interview showed the vice president answering a question differently than she did in the longer version, Trump accused the newsmagazine of trying to \u201cmake her look better\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also called on the Federal Communications Commission to \u201cTAKE AWAY THE CBS LICENSE\u201d. It was the culmination of months of speculation and attacks, as Trump dug into Biden as a \u201cweak\u201d and \u201csleepy\u201d old man.<\/p>\n<p>But at 78 years old, Trump himself has faced questions about his age and mental competency.<\/p>\n<p>Those questions came back into the spotlight this week. Last Sunday, The New York Times ran a story analysing Trump\u2019s \u201crambling\u201d and increasingly longwinded speeches, questioning whether his speech patterns reflected the toll of age.<\/p>\n<p>And then, on Saturday, the White House released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/VP-Harris-Health-Summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a> touting his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/10\/12\/kamala-harris-health-report-donald-trump-us-presidential-election\">Democratic rival\u2019s health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 59-year-old Harris, it read, \u201cpossesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has long touted his performance on cognitive tests as evidence of his abilities. On Saturday, his campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung responded to the media scrutiny with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donaldjtrump.com\/news\/135ab48a-4cda-4c57-a2d6-72fdbf80ea06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, arguing that Harris \u201cdoes not have the stamina\u201d of Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll have concluded he is in perfect and excellent health to be Commander in Chief,\u201d Cheung wrote of Trump.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3242823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3242823\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3242823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/2024-10-12T024233Z_2113212297_RC2QIAAMZ0J6_RTRMADP_3_USA-ELECTION-TRUMP-1728781439.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C501\" alt=\"Donald Trump speaks at a rally, as people hold up signs that read &quot;47&quot; behind him.\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3242823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former President Donald Trump holds a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada, on October 11 [Fred Greaves\/Reuters]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr\/>\n<h2 id=\"trump-lays-out-blueprint-for-anti-immigrant-agenda\">Trump lays out blueprint for anti-immigrant agenda<\/h2>\n<p>On the campaign trail this week, Trump ratcheted up his attacks on migrants in the US, continuing a streak of false and incendiary claims.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration has been one of the defining issues of Trump\u2019s political career, and he has gone to great lengths to project a hardline image.<\/p>\n<p>But critics warn his nativist rhetoric has grown increasingly extreme, echoing the sentiments of white supremacists and other controversial figures.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/10\/7\/trump-blames-murders-in-us-on-immigrants-with-bad-genes\">recorded an audio interview<\/a> with the Hugh Hewitt Show, where he repeated false claims that murderers were crossing the border into the US en masse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of them murdered far more than one person, and they\u2019re now happily living in the United States,\u201d Trump said. \u201cNow a murderer, I believe this: It\u2019s in their genes. His latest, landing right in the midst of the heated presidential race, offered an unflattering glimpse of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/10\/9\/new-book-claims-trump-spoke-seven-times-to-putin-since-leaving-white-house\">Trump\u2019s alleged relationship<\/a> with Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Entitled War, the book was released to news outlets on Tuesday in advance of landing on bookstore shelves.<\/p>\n<p>In its pages, an unnamed aide alleged Trump called Putin at least seven times since leaving office. The book also claimed that, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump sent virus-testing machines that were in short supply to Putin.<\/p>\n<p>News outlets have since struggled to independently verify some of the book\u2019s most headline-grabbing claims.
