The Super Heavy will potentially be caught midair with\u00a0a pair of massive metal pincers, which SpaceX calls \u201cchopsticks.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000a3b6mjk2zoi2w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the Starship spacecraft will continue flying on its own, using its six onboard engines, before practicing a landing maneuver over the Indian Ocean. SpaceX does not expect to recover the upper spacecraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000b3b6mc95mvk8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The goal for each milestone is to hash out how SpaceX might one day recover and rapidly refly Super Heavy boosters and Starship spacecraft for future missions. Quickly reusing rocket parts is considered essential to SpaceX\u2019s goal of drastically reducing the time and cost of getting cargo \u2014 or ships of people \u2014 to Earth\u2019s orbit and deep space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000c3b6mes1qgnle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SpaceX ultimately plans to use the Starship capsule as the landing vehicle that will ferry NASA astronauts to the lunar surface as soon as 2026 as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/09\/world\/nasa-artemis-moon-landing-delay-scn\/index.html\">Artemis III mission<\/a>, and the company has government contracts worth up to nearly $4 billion to complete the task. Eventually, SpaceX also hopes that Starship will put the first humans on Mars.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000d3b6mfxs5lz9j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Starship development has so far centered on a series of increasingly complex test flights, beginning in 2019 with brief hop tests of a vehicle nicknamed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/28\/business\/spacex-starhopper-starship-hop-150-meter-test\/index.html\">Starhopper<\/a>\u201d that initially lifted mere inches off the ground. More recently, the company has moved on to more daring launches of the fully stacked Starship capsule and Super Heavy booster.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000e3b6mm24jidyt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/20\/world\/spacex-starship-launch-thursday-scn\/index.html\">inaugural test launch of a Starship and Super Heavy<\/a> \u2014 called an integrated test flight \u2014 took off in April 2023. That launch aimed solely to get the 397-foot (121-meter) vehicle off the launchpad. And it did just that before exploding minutes into flight over the Gulf of Mexico.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000f3b6m1d8rcsbv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SpaceX is known to embrace fiery mishaps in the early stages of spacecraft development, saying these failures help the company rapidly implement design changes that lead to better results.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000g3b6mjev7p1hw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company\u2019s goals have grown more ambitious with each additional launch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000h3b6mmobp12ez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The last test launch \u2014 the fourth of SpaceX\u2019s integrated test flight campaign \u2014 took off in June. Both the booster and spacecraft, despite displaying a badly scorched and wobbly wing during the webcast, survived reentry into Earth\u2019s atmosphere and practiced touchdown maneuvers over the ocean, a significant step forward.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000i3b6mbxsl4g6u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SpaceX is now looking to push its testing even further by attempting to retrieve the Super Heavy booster post-launch.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000j3b6mbaqsgzxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ultimately, SpaceX plans to recover and reuse both the Super Heavy and the Starship spacecraft. But hashing out booster recovery is a natural first step, as SpaceX has extensive experience in that arena.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000k3b6mb3j1h6w0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Landing rocket boosters after flight is a feat that SpaceX mastered with its smaller workhorse rocket, the Falcon 9. Boosters from that rocket have made soft touchdowns on seafaring platforms or ground pads after more than 330 launches \u2014 allowing those vehicles to be refurbished and flown again. SpaceX says that has driven down its costs, allowing the company to undercut the rest of the rocket market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000l3b6mddq2xzfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Starship, however, is a far more powerful and complex system.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000m3b6mmfftrmdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With 33 engines at its base, each more powerful than one of the nine used on the Falcon, the Super Heavy booster packs roughly 10 times the amount of thrust at liftoff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000n3b6ma2ol2mbu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rather than strapping landing legs onto the side of the Super Heavy like the ones that adorn a Falcon 9\u2019s booster, SpaceX instead built a special tower to support the Super Heavy\u2019s return back to terra firma, hoping this will make the recovery process even quicker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000o3b6mvunacc8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The tower, dubbed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1562314849912119296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mechazilla<\/a>\u201d by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk for its likeness to a metallic Godzilla, has massive metal arms. The arms, or \u201cchopsticks,\u201d can be used to stack and move boosters and spacecraft at the launch site before takeoff \u2014 and they are designed to essentially catch the vehicles midair as they return to Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000p3b6mmoatp71l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Musk\u2019s vision is that the chopstick arms will ultimately be able to simply turn around and set a rocket back on the launchpad within minutes of its return \u2014 allowing the vehicle to take off again once it\u2019s refueled \u2014 perhaps as little as 30 minutes after touchdown, the CEO said in a June 5 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aFqjoCbZ4ik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000q3b6mapk1qz64@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s a bold vision. And SpaceX is still in the early stages of hashing out exactly how the catch will work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000r3b6mum84l0k1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Musk acknowledged during a July <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QWQX40qJEUU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> posted to YouTube that SpaceX\u2019s goal for this flight \u201csounds kind of insane,\u201d though its \u201cgot a decent chance of working.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000s3b6mtjwntgeg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re not breaking physics,\u201d he said, \u201cso success is one of the possible outcomes here.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000t3b6msbz94dcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One problem that Starship encountered during its fourth test flight in June, Musk added, was the loss of heat shield tiles \u2014 or thousands of small, black hexagons affixed to the spacecraft\u2019s exterior that are meant to shield the vehicle from extreme temperatures during reentry. Losing a large number of those tiles deeply hindered the vehicle\u2019s ability to attempt a soft landing, according to Musk.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000u3b6mprgul3eg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBecause of lost tiles \u2026 the forward flaps were so melted it was like trying to control it with little skeleton hands,\u201d Musk said, adding that the fourth flight landed roughly 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) away from its intended splashdown site in the ocean.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000v3b6m8j1zhkds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the fifth test flight, the upper Starship spacecraft will once again attempt to land upright in a controlled maneuver over the ocean.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000w3b6m6x6j5sl7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company states on its website that it carried out a \u201ccomplete rework of its heatshield, with SpaceX technicians spending more than 12,000 hours replacing the entire thermal protection system with newer-generation tiles, a backup ablative layer, and additional protections between the flap structures.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000x3b6mp25yerwh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That could help Starship better survive the brutalities of reentry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000y3b6mnjafqeg7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If this flight is successful, it could cue up the company to tackle far more ambitious projects. For example, SpaceX must figure out how to refuel a Starship spacecraft while it\u2019s stationed in orbit. Such a maneuver will be necessary to give the massive vehicle enough propellant to make the journey out to the moon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua000z3b6mu836tfva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the company fails to reach its goals or creates substantial damage to its launch facilities, it could raise questions about additional delays for NASA\u2019s lunar ambitions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua00103b6m39cprxro@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Artemis, NASA\u2019s flagship human spaceflight program, is aiming to put astronauts on the surface of the moon for the first time since the Apollo program ended more than 50 years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm25caqua00113b6mg2wo3s9j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Already, the federal space agency has warned that its goal of making the first crewed landing on the lunar surface in 2026 may be held up by Starship\u2019s development timeline.\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/13\/science\/spacex-starship-test-flight-5-launch\/index.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sign up for CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter.\u00a0Explore the universe with news on fascinating discoveries, scientific advancements and more.
