Numbers don&#8217;t lie. Tonight, we have a special match-up: <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/bowen-yang\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"5\">Bowen Yang<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Wicked\u00a0<\/em>costar <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/ariana-grande\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"6\">Ariana Grande<\/a> is being teamed with a deep cut\u00a0<em>SNL\u00a0<\/em>musical guest, a genuine legend: Stevie Nicks. With her, as always, is Andy Samberg as &#8220;Doug the Shrug&#8221; alongside Joe Biden (<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/dana-carvey\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">Dana Carvey<\/a>) and Tim Walz (<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/jim-gaffigan\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\">Jim Gaffigan<\/a>). Steve Harvey asks Harris what she keeps in her glove compartment. After spewing her boilerplate stump speech, Harvey cajoles her to say &#8220;glock.&#8221; And when it&#8217;s Doug&#8217;s turn, he says &#8220;second gun&#8221; \u2014 the rest of the Democratic team isn&#8217;t quite as successful.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> James Austin Johnson&#8217;s Trump is NOT joined by wife Melania. <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/mikey-day\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Mikey Day<\/a> returns as Don Jr. but no Alex Moffat as Eric? That is a shame.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Doug Emeroff has expressed approval of <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/andy-samberg\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Andy Samberg<\/a>&#8216;s impression \u2014 so has Kamala Harris regarding Rudolph&#8217;s portrayal of her. I asked Gary Kroeger if Samberg&#8217;s take is too soft. He notes: &#8220;It is the actor&#8217;s job to do the impression and it&#8217;s the sketches job to do the satire.\u00a0An impression isn&#8217;t necessarily spot-on mimicry, but should have a character twist that comes from the actor in order to reveal a new way to look at them\u2026 The fact that Emeroff liked Samberg&#8217;s impression is nice, I think. I did a few back in the day and my intention always held out the hope that the subject being impersonated would find my take amusing.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Kroeger adds: &#8220;I don&#8217;t care for the fact that celebrities are brought in to do the political impressions. I&#8217;m not arguing with the success of it or the fact that viewership may go up, but I&#8217;ve always thought the cast should do everything on\u00a0<em>SNL\u00a0<\/em>with very few exceptions.\u00a0That&#8217;s the magic of the show to me, that there&#8217;s a cast that can do anything put in front of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-monologue\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block ew-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\"> Monologue <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p><iframe id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0-iframe\" class=\"mntl-sc-block-embed--iframe lazyload\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" frameborder=\"0\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" title=\"Ariana Grande Monologue - SNL\" data-expand=\"300\" data-src=\"\/embed?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DB4-oeOqfCaI&amp;id=mntl-sc-block_24-0-iframe&amp;options=e30%3D&amp;docId=8726858\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Grande notes she has had a great year \u2014 she&#8217;s a theater kid, so it&#8217;s a dream to star in\u00a0<em>Wicked<\/em>. One point: She is just here to host, stay low key and NOT sing. With that, she immediately breaks out into song. And yes, she impersonates Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Gwen Stefani during her number. As noted earlier, she did this in 2016 in an actual sketch. With modern <em>SNL<\/em>, though, it&#8217;s just a box they check.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Grande and Bowen Yang have a nice moment commenting on <em>Wicked<\/em>. (Gary Kroeger hasn&#8217;t seen the show, but recalls that his former cast member Tim Kazurinsky was once in it and heard he was great!)\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She summons a chorus line of dancers at the end of her song for the grand finale. And thus, a spoof of Sabrina Carpenter&#8217;s &#8220;Espresso&#8221; commences. The girls \u2014 Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, and Grande \u2014 recount a story about the bride and a man named Domingo getting together on the girls&#8217; weekend. &#8220;Not for nothing, but the rhyme scheme has gone completely out of the weekend,&#8221; whines the groom (Andrew Dismukes). He grows increasingly concerned. Seems she missed a few cues.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Sarah Squirm as a severed human head is sly casting.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_46-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> FYI \u2014 Bulla has produced several <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/adam-sandler\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Adam Sandler<\/a> films such as <em>The Ridiculous 6, Murder Mystery, <\/em>and\u00a0<em>Hubie Halloween<\/em>. So now,\u00a0<em>SNL<\/em>&#8216;s satirical take is what if she did it for UFC?
