The good news? You don\u2019t have to exercise for three hours a day and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eat a diet entirely of fish and plant-based foods to keep your heart healthy. A few simple tweaks can go a long way.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the easiest things you can do is to eliminate (or strictly limit) certain foods that are especially hard on your heart. Bacon is especially high in salt, saturated fat, cholesterol, heme iron, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heterocyclic amines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2><strong>White Bread<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White bread<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 think Wonder Bread products, or similar white breads you might find in a bag at the grocery store \u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be very bad for your heart, according to Routhenstein.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhite bread, with its high glycemic index and lack of nutrients and fiber compared to whole-grain options, can lead to rapid blood sugar spikes, insulin resistance and weight gain, all of which increase the risk of heart disease and related complications,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.rush.edu\/details\/18125\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Dr. Daniel Luger\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"67081a8ee4b047df57071473\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/doctors.rush.edu\/details\/18125\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Daniel Luger<\/span><\/a>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a preventive cardiologist at R<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ush University Medical Center in Chicago,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> echoed this.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll refined carbohydrates increase your circulating glucose and triglyceride levels,\u201d he said. \u201cWhite bread is stripped of all of the healthy fiber and nutrients. What\u2019s left is pure sugar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering whether the baguettes that were made in your grocery store\u2019s bakery department are any healthier than a bag of white Wonder Bread, you can take some cues from the ingredients label. Luger suggested looking for a \u201c100% whole-grain\u201d stamp on the package, as well as carefully reading the list of ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at the ingredient list, you want to see the first ingredient being listed as whole (whole wheat, whole grain, etc.),\u201d he said. \u201cIdeally, when looking at the ingredient list you want to see only a handful of ingredients, and be able to recognize what those ingredients are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2><strong>French Fries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In especially devastating news, french fries aren\u2019t doing your heart any favors.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen food is fried, its nutritional content changes \u2014 the food loses water and takes up fat,\u201d Setareh-Shenas explained. \u201cEspecially in the case of french fries, the oil is often reused, which leads to a loss of unsaturated fats and an increase in trans fats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. F<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rench fries are also topped with lots of salt, and high sodium intake has been associated with high blood pressure and an increase in heart disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regular consumption of fried food in general, he added, has been linked to an increase in coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2><strong>What Should You Eat Instead?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know what you shouldn\u2019t be eating. But which foods can improve heart health?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI highly recommend increased consumption of legumes like lentils, chickpeas and beans,\u201d Luger said. \u201cLegumes are high in healthy fiber and help promote satiety, regulate bowel movements and feed healthy gut bacteria.
