But it was all \u201cconstrued as something it was never intended to be, and I apologize for that\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">On the video, Plank genuflects before Whitmer, who then places a Dorito chip in the influencer\u2019s mouth. The governor caps the scene off by gazing at the camera while she wears a hat supporting fellow Democrat Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz in November\u2019s presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Michigan Catholic Conference \u2013 which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.micatholic.org\/advocacy\/news-room\/news-releases\/2023\/catholic-conference-responds-to-gov-whitmers-comments-on-abortion-paid-family-leave\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">clashed<\/a> with Whitmer over her support of abortion rights \u2013 joined other church groups in condemning the governor\u2019s video with Plank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.micatholic.org\/advocacy\/news-room\/news-releases\/2024\/whitmers-social-media-skit-prompts-catholic-bishops-conference-to-urge-greater-respect-for-religion-in-public-life\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">statement<\/a> Friday from the conference\u2019s chief executive officer, Paul Long, accused Whitmer and Plank of \u201cspecifically imitating the posture and gestures of Catholics receiving the Eucharist\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Long\u2019s statement alluded to how Catholics believe the wafers used for the sacrament of communion literally transform into the body of the crucified Jesus Christ, adding: \u201cIt is not just distasteful or \u2018strange\u2019; it is an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious persons and their practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Whitmer subsequently issued her apology and said she had taken time to speak with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/michigan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Michigan<\/a> Catholic Conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">People that WJBK described as \u201cDemocratic sources with knowledge of Whitmer\u2019s participation in the video\u201d also made it a point to tell the station that the video was part of a viral social media challenge that involved awkwardly feeding friends on camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In his statement, Long added: \u201cWhile dialogue on this issue with the governor\u2019s office is appreciated, whether or not insulting Catholics and the Eucharist was the intent, it has had an offensive impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Whitmer has been Michigan\u2019s governor since 2019. She had previously been considered a possible candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination after Biden ruled out running for re-election and endorsed Harris to succeed him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">But Whitmer ultimately ruled herself out, has been a prominent supporter of Harris and recently made headlines by calling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Donald Trump<\/a> \u201cjust deranged\u201d after the Republican nominee boasted that women would no longer be thinking about abortion if voters gave him a second presidency on 5 November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Michigan stands among one of a handful of vital swing states that is expected to decide Harris\u2019s race against Trump.
