Every year, I wait until the last possible day to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s because a substantial body of research shows that flu shot effectiveness <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/73\/4\/726\/6104243\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wanes<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/73\/4\/726\/6104243\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">markedly<\/a> over time, just as that of Covid-19 shots do, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0264410X14008536?via=ihub\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">particularly<\/a> in high-risk individuals. After just a few weeks, antibodies produced in response to flu vaccinations reach their highest levels. I don\u2019t want my antibodies idling in September and October, only to be dropping right as the dependable winter influenza peak approaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And yet, tens of millions of Americans heeded public health messaging to get vaccinated as soon as possible \u2014 starting as early as September. By now a quarter of seniors in the United States have received their annual flu shots. Their bodies are brimming with new vaccine-induced antibodies, ready to fend off any flu virus they encounter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The trouble is there\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluview\/surveillance\/usmap.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">no battle<\/a> for them to wage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the United States, seasonal flu levels are still reliably <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/weekly\/usmap.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">low<\/a> at this time of year. Levels can start to increase in November, but in most years, they really take off in December, or even later. In the first week of October last year, weekly flu-related hospitalizations were over 44 times <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluview\/overview\/fluview-interactive.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">lower<\/a> than they were at their eventual peak, which occurred, as expected, in late December.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Why doesn\u2019t the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend people wait until late October or even early November to receive their annual flu shots?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Epidemiologists for the C.D.C. are chasing the wrong outcome. They seem focused on one metric: vaccine uptake, the percent of the population vaccinated against the flu every season.
