Almost seven minutes following liftoff, the Super Heavy booster returned to its launchpad, where the launch tower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/mission\/?missionId=starship-flight-5\">caught it<\/a> using arms that SpaceX has nicknamed the \u201cchopsticks.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The remarkable catch was a first for SpaceX and an important step toward making the Super Heavy booster a fully reusable launch system just like SpaceX\u2019s Falcon 9 rockets. The craft reentered the Earth\u2019s atmosphere about 45 minutes after liftoff and carried out a \u201csoft\u201d splashdown in the Indian Ocean at 9:30AM ET. The company used new heat shielding tiles and added an extra backup ablative layer, as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpaceX\"><em>ArsTechnica <\/em>described<\/a> last week. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave SpaceX approval for the test flight <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpaceX\">only yesterday<\/a>.
