He accepted an endorsement from the agents\u2019 union, the National Border Patrol Council, which is a longtime Trump backer that endorsed him during his prior two campaigns. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has made illegal immigration the focus of his campaign and blamed Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, for a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-border-crossings-mexico-biden-18ac91ef502e0c5433f74de6cc629b32\">record spike in unauthorized crossings<\/a><\/span> at the U.S.-Mexico border. He frequently denounces people entering the U.S. illegally as invaders and criminals, and he has vowed to stage the largest deportation operation in American history if he is elected president again.<\/p>\n<p>He did defy the union earlier this year when he convinced Republicans to kill a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/border-immigration-senate-vote-924f48912eecf1dc544dc648d757c3fe\">bipartisan immigration bill<\/a><\/span> that contained additional border resources. According to the White House, the bill would have funded 1,500 personnel at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which includes the Border Patrol. <\/p>\n<p>Trump at the time said he did not want to give Democrats a political victory on his key issue. At the rally, Trump contended the legislation was \u201ca horrible bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump and his allies routinely call Harris the \u201cborder czar,\u201d even though she\u2019s <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harris-migration-border-central-america-46d23ad3b0e8a1780ac0a6a306120b3c\">never had that title<\/a><\/span>. President Joe Biden <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-3400f56255e000547d1ca3ce1aa6b8e9?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=ncl_amplify&amp;utm_campaign=240910-keep_these_facts_in_mind_tonight&amp;utm_content=ncl-t3RtQCgJdZ&amp;_nlid=t3RtQCgJdZ&amp;_nhids=JZ7miqj51\">did ask Harris<\/a><\/span> early in his administration to study the \u201croot causes\u201d of migration from Central America. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we allow Border Czar Harris to win this election, every city, every community in this great country is going to go to hell,\u201d union president Paul Perez said as he stood next to Trump on stage with a group of agents. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has vowed to complete a border wall if he\u2019s returned to the White House. He routinely trumpets his comparatively low numbers of border crossings with the much higher ones during Biden\u2019s first three years in office, though currently crossings are <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/news-highlights\/spotlights\/2024\/one-day-along-the-texas-mexico-border-shows-that-realities-shift-more-rapidly-than-rhetoric\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">back down<\/a><\/span> to levels at or below those seen during most of Trump\u2019s term.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s term was also marked by a struggle to crack down on illegal crossings before the COVID-19 pandemic led to international border closures.
