That\u2019s the case for Kris Hleuka, whose grandfather built her home on Sand Dollar Lane. Now, sand fills the first story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis is my life history,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As storm after storm hits the state, Hleuka has watched her home be torn apart. For many in the community, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/consumer\/hurricane-milton-helene-insurance-nightmares-torment-florida-residents-rcna175088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homeowners insurance<\/a> isn\u2019t an option.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAfter Ian, we completely rebuilt the house. I\u2019m not doing this again,\u201d she said. \u201cWe can\u2019t afford insurance down on the beach like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Residents on the key are in \u201cshock and mourning\u201d that their little piece of paradise is gone, said Brenda Kreuger, a friend of Hleuka&#8217;s who lives in Englewood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jay and Pam Hager have owned a timeshare at the Sea Oats Beach Club for decades. I\u2019ve been coming here for 40 years and never seen anything close to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Officials are working to remove the piles of sand that have buried the roads so they can reopen Manasota Key. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHouses were decimated. They\u2019re gone into the Gulf, and we didn\u2019t have that with Helene,\u201d said Ben Bailey, community development director for Charlotte County.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;I have never seen anything like this.
