An estimated 4.4% of adults 18 to 44 have ADHD, according to The Ohio State University researchers who oversaw the August survey of 1,006 adults.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>One in four US adults suspect they have undiagnosed ADHD, a new study finds, but only 13% have shared their concerns with a doctor. <span class=\"credit\">Kamran \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder is a developmental disorder characterized by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. <span class=\"credit\">bernardbodo \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAnxiety, depression and ADHD \u2014 all these things can look a lot alike, but the wrong treatment can make things worse instead of helping that person feel better and improving their functioning,\u201d said psychologist and Ohio State clinical assistant professor <a href=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/mediaroom\/expertslisting\/justin-barterian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Justin Barterian<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Barterian said adults may realize they have undiagnosed ADHD once their <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/23\/lifestyle\/1-in-9-us-children-diagnosed-with-adhd\/\">kids are diagnosed<\/a> and they notice they have similar symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/dr-robert-howard-dicker-md-11314655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Robert Dicker<\/a>, associate director of child and adolescent psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital, said sometimes he will diagnose a child with ADHD and start treatment \u2014 only for one of the child\u2019s parents to admit that they have long struggled with the same symptoms.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cOften with adults, they tell me that their parents didn\u2019t believe they had ADHD, that it was frowned on, the school system didn\u2019t support them, or they were stigmatized not for having ADHD, but being poor students and bad kids,\u201d Dicker, who was not involved with the new research, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6477889\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ADHD tends to run in families<\/a>. Environmental factors, such as brain injuries, premature birth and lead exposure during childhood, can also raise the odds of a diagnosis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>ADHD symptoms can worsen with stress, conflict or increased life demands. <span class=\"credit\">DedMityay \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Barterian said <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/19\/startling-number-of-women-using-tiktok-to-self-diagnose-adhd\/\">social media videos<\/a> have recently been cluing people into ADHD symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9567752\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A 2022 study<\/a> published in the journal European Psychiatry found that many young people are diagnosing themselves with ADHD after watching TikToks on the matter.
