But data shows others weren&#8217;t frightened away.<\/p>\n<p>International arrivals to Spain continued to rise this summer, with some 10.9 million arriving in August \u2014 a 7% year-on-year increase, according to Spain&#8217;s National Statistics Institute. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And the top three most popular destinations were the very spots where protesters staged marches this year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some 2.4 million international travelers visited the Balearic Islands \u2014 home to Mallorca \u2014 in August, a 4% jump from the same period in 2023, data showed. Another 2.3 million foreigners went to Catalonia \u2014 where Barcelona is located \u2014 a 6% increase from 2023. Some 1.6 million went to Andalusia, up 9% year-on-year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108046956\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108046956\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000354546\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108046957-17288644061728864403-36658531193-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1728864404&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Protestors in Spain told travelers to 'go home.' Did they listen?\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>A survey published by Mallorca&#8217;s tourism board showed 89% of American travelers said they were either unaware or unconcerned about the protests that occurred on Mallorca this year, according to the travel news website Skift. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of those who knew about the demonstrations, nearly 70% said they had &#8220;no impact&#8221; on their travel intentions, <a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2024\/09\/26\/mallorca-had-record-hotel-stays-despite-overtourism-protests\/?utm_campaign=Newsletter%20%7C%20The%20Daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8fEz_JeOu4dKzkHPM3xPKv0uMPpuEp7GZSIuIFgPUYTxwg-jIPAR0YcLpnRkkdCC0zzoP6Kuh6qy4Z3N2e883I8qy9eQ&amp;_hsmi=326524474&amp;utm_content=326523580&amp;utm_source=hs_email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skift reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>&#8216;Bookings bounced back&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Most visitors to Spain are fellow Europeans. However, Booking.com \u2014 Europe&#8217;s largest online travel agency by market share \u2014 told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/cnbc-travel\/\">CNBC Travel<\/a> it didn&#8217;t see any meaningful shifts in post-protest bookings to Mallorca or Barcelona.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108046959\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108046959\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000354547\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/108046960-17288657261728865723-36658755601-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1728865724&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Expect more protests against mass tourism in Spain, organizers say\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>But RateGain, a software company that processes transactions and intent data for the global travel industry, said it saw a &#8220;notable impact&#8221; in searches and bookings to Barcelona after the July 6 protest.<\/p>\n<p>The effect, however, was short-lived. &#8220;We observed a 23% decline in hotel bookings within 7 to 10 days of the event, along with a 35% drop in search activity,&#8221; a company representative told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Within six weeks, &#8220;bookings bounced back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>&#8216;Not the end&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Barcelona&#8217;s July 6 protest &#8220;is not the end of anything,&#8221; said Daniel Pardo Rivacoba, a member of the Assembly of Neighbourhoods for Tourism Degrowth, the organization behind the protest.<\/p>\n<p>Rather it was a step toward the organization&#8217;s larger goals \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/assembleabarris.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a published list of 13 demands<\/a> \u2014 that call on Barcelona&#8217;s officials to reverse plans to expand the city&#8217;s airport, reduce the number of cruise terminals near the city, curtail the short-term rental market, and end tax-funded tourism promotion of the city. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108046412\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A tourist takes a picture of a message at Park Guell. Anti-tourism organizers have called for a 50% reduction in daily ticket sales to the site, one of Barcelona&#8217;s top tourist draws.<\/p>\n<p>Josep Lago | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Barcelona&#8217;s city council didn&#8217;t directly respond to the July 6 protest, Rivacoba told CNBC Travel, but it has since announced new measures aimed at tackling overtourism, including the 135-page &#8220;Government Measure For Tourism Management 2024-2027&#8221; released on Sept. 17.<\/p>\n<p>The measure outlined 55 actions to help strike a better balance between tourists and residents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108046420\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A sign targeting German tourists on the Balearic island of Mallorca on Aug. 11, 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clara Margais | Picture Alliance | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>But it&#8217;s all just &#8220;cosmetic speeches and social washing,&#8221; said Rivacoba.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Barcelona&#8217;s City Council told CNBC Travel that managing the city&#8217;s tourism is one its main priorities since it is &#8220;reaching a limit with 17 million visitors per year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tourism\u00a0is\u00a0strategic\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0city\u00a0economy\u00a0so\u00a0it\u00a0represents\u00a014% GPD,&#8221; the spokesperson said. &#8220;The\u00a0measure\u00a0of\u00a0success\u00a0of\u00a0tourism\u00a0in Barcelona\u00a0cannot\u00a0focus on the volume of visitors but rather on\u00a0managing\u00a0the\u00a0flow\u00a0of\u00a0people\u00a0so as\u00a0not\u00a0to\u00a0exceed\u00a0a social\u00a0and\u00a0environmental\u00a0limit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/travel-logistics-and-infrastructure\/our-insights\/destination-readiness-preparing-for-the-tourist-flows-of-tomorrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Managing visitors flows<\/a> is a strategy that is fast gaining ground as a way to mitigate overtourism, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gim-international.com\/content\/news\/addressing-overtourism-with-a-lidar-powered-guidance-solution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use of sensors<\/a> and mobile phone monitoring tools to provide real-time crowd data.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not good enough for Rivacoba&#8217;s organization, which advocates for a reduction in tourist numbers, he said.<\/p>\n<p>In regards to the recent decision by the city council to increase a nightly tourism surcharge by 4 euros ($4.38), Rivacoba said &#8220;this will in no way be a measure to decrease tourism, but to collect more money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>&#8216;Winning the struggle&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Despite claims that an influx of summer tourists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/1956744\/spain-tourist-records-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">humiliated protesters<\/a>, Rivacoba said they are enthusiastic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Public opinion of the people from Barcelona about touristification changed a lot, from the official narration &#8216;tourism is good for everyone&#8217;, which is no longer believable for anyone, to \u2026 &#8216;touristification went too far,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108046410\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Dozens of Barcelona residents protest against the America&#8217;s Cup sailing competition on Sept. 7, 2024. Anti-tourism organizers have called for the city to limit large-scale events, including the Spanish Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Asensio\u00a0| Nurphoto | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Rivacoba said more than 15,000 people marched on July 6, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalannews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local media<\/a> have reported the number to be around 3,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>He also said media coverage about overtourism has changed. &#8220;Not so long ago we were mistreated, or directly ignored,&#8221; he said.
