id=\"mol-936d4e20-8a47-11ef-9d9b-953ecfbdcb59\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) issued an alert for the three asteroids, the closest of which will come within 192,000 miles of Earth &#8211; 48,000 miles closer than the moon is to us currently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The size and close proximity of the asteroids can provide astronomers with a unique research opportunity as they work to create a defense system that will <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-13882751\/Earth-catastrophic-asteroid-strike-nuke.html\" rel=\"noopener\">prevent future space rocks from hitting Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div between the Earth and moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Meanwhile, a bus-sized asteroid named 2021 TK11 and 2024 TH3 &#8211; roughly the size of a house &#8211; will approach Earth from 1.9 million miles and 2.8 million miles away respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, NASA has confirmed the asteroids will not <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-5307589\/Nasa-eases-fears-asteroid-size-Burj-Khalifa.html\" rel=\"noopener\">come close enough to our planet and &#8216;therefore pose no risk of impact<\/a>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">These asteroids are categorized as <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-13600817\/planet-killing-asteroids-Earth-NASA.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Near-Earth Objects<\/a> (NEOs) because they come within 120 million miles of the Sun thanks to the gravitational pull of other nearby planets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">As more asteroids are observed, the accuracy with which astronomers can predict to or collide with Earth, preventing another catastrophe like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although none of the impending asteroids pose a major threat, NASA is preparing for a worst-case scenario by studying NEOs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">NASA established its Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) in 2016 to locate, track and better understand comets and asteroids &#8216;that could pose an impact hazard to Earth.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The agency developed the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-9688415\/NASA-approved-launch-space-telescope-save-humanity-asteroid-crash.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Near-Earth Object Surveyor space telescope<\/a> (NEO Surveyor) which is set to launch in 2027 to discover and characterize potentially hazardous asteroids that come within 30 million
