But the decision was reversed on appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Undeterred, she pursued the case to the United States Supreme Court, which in 2007 also ruled against her, saying that she was too late \u2014 that she should have filed her claim within 180 days of receiving her first unequal paycheck, citing a narrow interpretation of the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a vigorous dissent, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/18\/us\/ruth-bader-ginsburg-dead.html\" title=\"\">Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg<\/a> said it was all but impossible for Ms. Ledbetter to have known of her unfair pay in such a time period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To close this loophole, Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009, which was the first piece of legislation that President Barack Obama signed into law, shortly after his inauguration.
