A brick tips over onto its leg, trapping it as it struggles to move on.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn00033b6kixkd65j7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few seconds later, the body wriggles away, leaving one of its legs lying motionless under the brick.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn00043b6kyvdqpzu5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The robot, which can amputate its limbs \u2014 just like a gecko can release its tail when it is grabbed by a hungry predator \u2014 is the creation of researchers at Yale University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn00053b6k23tsrzwt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The main innovation is the robot\u2019s joints. The substance that holds them together has a rubbery consistency at room temperature. When it\u2019s heated up, it becomes more liquidlike, allowing the limb to break off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn00063b6ka33sp62a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The joint works in reverse too. Different pieces can be fused together to create a multi-module machine. In the Yale laboratory, three robots join to cross a gap that\u2019s too wide for one to bridge on its own.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn00073b6k3ry63q9c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most modern robots have been made with hard materials, like metals and plastics. But interest is growing in \u201csoft\u201d robots built from pliable materials. Proponents say their flexibility allows them to navigate tight spaces and difficult environments, or to take on delicate tasks better than their rigid counterparts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn00083b6kyb8htaud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yale\u2019s gecko-inspired robot\u2019s ability to reconfigure itself creates a soft robot that\u2019s even more adaptable. \u201cWe can edit the robot\u2019s functionality\u202fon\u202fdemand,\u201d said Bilige Yang, a graduate researcher at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, who led the research into the robot that was published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adma.202400241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advanced Materials<\/a> in late May.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000a3b6k25y5q4jb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, soft robots are used for things like <a href=\"https:\/\/soft-gripping.com\/discover\/softgrippers-for-harvesting-robots-in-agriculture-benefits-and-applications\/#:~:text=In%2520lettuce%2520handling%252C%2520SoftGrippers%2520are,produce%252C%2520reducing%2520damage%2520and%2520waste.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strawberry picking<\/a>, but they aren\u2019t yet widespread, Yu Jun Tan, an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), who is not involved in Yang\u2019s research, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000b3b6k532lm7vn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But roboticists around the world are working on soft robots, often inspired by nature, to tackle a variety of tasks \u2013 from a tiny, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advancedsciencenews.com\/soft-robot-transports-and-delivers-drugs-inside-the-gut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">starfish-like device<\/a> for carrying medicine into the twisty human intestine, to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/robotics-and-ai\/articles\/10.3389\/frobt.2019.00126\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jellyfish-inspired soft machine<\/a> for underwater exploration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000c3b6kuf5qxd3l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tan, who works on materials for soft electronics and soft robotics, says that Yale\u2019s robot is the first self-amputating, self-reconfigurable soft robot she\u2019s seen. \u201cIt\u2019s a very, added that she hopes to see the joint used with robots made with biodegradable materials, for minimum impact in the environment where an amputated part is left.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000e3b6k1suhm8ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to Yang, nature has developed its own solutions \u201cAnd we can really take inspiration instead of starting from scratch.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000f3b6kvxltworc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A soft robot that can leave a limb behind could be helpful in search and rescue missions in dangerous rubble, and planetary exploration on treacherous terrain, said Yang.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000g3b6k3jxflplw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat if a soft robot is just minding its own business walking in the wild, but then some part of it is trapped under a rock?\u201d he questioned. \u201cHow does the rest of the robot continue on to finish its mission?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000h3b6kdjgik0zp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yang and his colleagues plan to incorporate their innovations into other soft robots they\u2019re working on in the Yale lab, allowing them to become parts in larger modular systems, shapeshifting depending on the task at hand, and adding capabilities as they go.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0q54arn000i3b6kwskb7jet@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He gives an example of a robot that doesn\u2019t have enough computational power to process the inputs from the environment it\u2019s working in being able to pick up an extra microprocessor and integrate it. \u201cWe can now adapt soft robots \u2026 after\u202fthe robot is underway for its tasks,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0umvagt00043b6kfbo96ukp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Next up?
