Lee Ermey<\/a><\/span> as Marine Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/stanley-kubrick\">Stanley Kubrick\u2019s<\/a><\/span> 1987 classic Vietnam War film \u201cFull Metal Jacket.\u201d Ermey\u2019s character was known for his vulgar and at times racist outbursts as he taunts and bullies recruits.<\/p>\n<p>Those clips, captioned \u201cTHEN,\u201d are juxtaposed against clips of people expressing support for LGBTQ+ rights and drag performers, captioned \u201cNOW\u201d and \u201cTHE BIDEN HARRIS MILITARY.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video ends with a shot from the movie, a scene before the recruits were sent to Vietnam, captioned with \u201cLET\u2019S MAKE OUR MILITARY GREAT AGAIN.\u201d The video was shown at several Trump rallies before he <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1845343182458061298\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted it<\/a><\/span> on social media on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-moms-for-liberty-election-2024-education-7b408b46f58c4ba6177f809c4d0b2fb2\">often rails against<\/a><\/span> the growing acceptance of transgender people, including the use of pronouns and transgender women in women\u2019s sports, drawing some of the biggest applause lines at his rallies by pledging to restrict them.<\/p>\n<p>Trump earlier this month hailed the performance by Ermey, who served in the Marines as a drill sergeant before acting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was supposed to get the Academy Award,\u201d Trump told his audience in Wisconsin, saying he was denied the honor because \u201che wasn\u2019t part of the establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In using the movie to illustrate Trump\u2019s ideal military, the campaign borrowed from what is recognized as an anti-war film. Never mind that the film is about Vietnam, for which Trump <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/e9d7ee3a39ec465bbb21cec8416d824b\">received medical deferments<\/a><\/span>, despite having attended high school at New York Military Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian Kubrick, the late filmmaker\u2019s daughter, said she believes her father would have embraced Trump and forgiven his use of an anti-war film to make his point about building a powerful military. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s primarily what FMJ is about, the shocking and complicated paradoxes of human nature,\u201d Vivian Kubrick <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/viku1111\/status\/1845553795276689790?s=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a><\/span> Sunday on the social media platform X. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd thus, on this tooth and claw planet, you need a very strong military \u2014 so I\u2019m going to stick with the idea that FMJ footage was used primarily because of its powerful, realistic portrayal of boot camp, juxtaposed with the entirely demoralizing and inappropriate injection of WOKE ideology into the USA military,\u201d she added. \u201cWhich I agree with myself and which I\u2019m certain my father would have agreed with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ermey\u2019s \u201cFull Metal Jacket\u201d co-star Matthew Modine, who played Private Joker in the film and is in some of the clips included in Trump\u2019s video, saw things differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIronically, Trump has twisted and profoundly distorted Kubrick\u2019s powerful anti-war film into a perverse, homophobic, and manipulative tool of propaganda,\u201d Modine <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/full-metal-jacket-actor-matthew-modine-criticizes-donald-trump-for-using-film-clips-8727878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script>\n  window.fbAsyncInit = function() {\n      FB.init({\n              appId : '870613919693099',\n          xfbml : true,\n          version : 'v2.9'\n      });\n  };\n  (function(d, s, id){\n     var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\n     if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;}\n     js = d.createElement(s);
