With little auroral activity since, photographers&#8217; dreams of creating images including both rare sky phenomena appear to be fading. It was one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms of the century. That will be a hard act to follow. (If you missed them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/11\/why-you-missed-the-northern-lights-last-night-and-how-to-see-them-next-time\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/11\/why-you-missed-the-northern-lights-last-night-and-how-to-see-them-next-time\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamiecartereurope\/2024\/10\/11\/why-you-missed-the-northern-lights-last-night-and-how-to-see-them-next-time\/\" aria-label=\"here's probably why\" rel=\"noopener\">here&#8217;s probably why<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An extreme G5 is <em>not<\/em> what&#8217;s happening tonight \u2014 far from it \u2014 and it\u2019s difficult to predict where and when exactly the Northern Lights will show up on Tuesday night, but those in northern-tier U.S. states may get a glimpse of at least photographic aurora (aurora detectable only by camera or smartphone). After all, a G1 is the weakest storm classification.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-10\" role=\"presentation\"><figcaption><fbs-accordion class=\"expandable\" current=\"-1\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">This is a prediction of the intensity and location of the aurora borealis tonight and tomorrow night <span class=\"plus\" data-ga-track=\"caption expand\">&#8230; [+]<\/span><span class=\"expanded-caption\"> over North America. Possibly not, but with comet C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) visible to the naked eye this week there could be a chance to grab an image like the one above. The comet is currently visible in the west about 45 minutes after sunset from the Northern Hemisphere and for about an hour and 40 minutes afterward (though do check the exact time of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/sun\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/sun\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/sun\/\" aria-label=\"sunset where you are\">sunset where you are<\/a> and the comet\u2019s setting times on <a href=\"https:\/\/stellarium-web.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/stellarium-web.org\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/stellarium-web.org\/\" aria-label=\"Stellarium Web\">Stellarium Web<\/a> for times accurate for your exact location). However, the high number of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun (which are currently causing the frequent and powerful geomagnetic storms) can often be strongest in the two years after solar maximum.
