Dozens of tall white wind turbines whoosh up in the sky. A sea of solar panels glistens in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>But the new kid on the block is mostly hidden underground.<\/p>\n<p>From the surface, <a href=\"https:\/\/fervoenergy.com\/\">Fervo Energy<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/capestation.com\/\">Cape Station<\/a> looks more or less like an oil derrick, with a thin metal tower rising above the sagebrush steppe.<\/p>\n<p>But this $2 billion geothermal project, which broke ground last year, is not drilling for gas. It\u2019s drilling for underground heat that CEO Tim Latimer believes holds the key to generating carbon-free power \u2014 lots of it.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cJust these three well pads alone will produce 100 megawatts of electricity. Around-the-clock, 24\/7 electricity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Latimer stood overlooking the project, which is currently under construction, on one of the drill rig\u2019s metal platforms 40 feet off the ground. Then the water squeezes through cracks in 400-degree rock. The water heats up and returns to the surface through a second well that runs parallel to the first. That creates steam that turns turbines to produce electricity, and the water gets sent back underground in a closed loop.<\/p>\n<p>This horizontal well technique has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuer.org\/business-economy\/2023-09-18\/how-rural-southwest-utah-is-proving-the-potential-of-renewable-geothermal-energy\">pioneered<\/a> at a $300 million federal research project called <a href=\"https:\/\/utahforge.com\/\">Utah FORGE<\/a> located in this same valley, which has paved the way for private companies to take the tech and run with it.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Recent innovations like better drill bits \u2014 made with synthetic diamonds to eat through hard subterranean granite \u2014 have helped Fervo drill its latest well in a quarter of the time that it took just a couple of years ago. That efficiency has meant an 80% drop in drilling costs, Latimer said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Fervo\u2019s pilot project in Nevada used similar techniques to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/sustainability\/google-fervo-geothermal-energy-partnership\/\">begin sending<\/a> electricity to a Google data center. And the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fervoenergy.com\/fervo-energys-record-breaking-production-results-showcase-rapid-scale-up-of-enhanced-geothermal\/\">early tests<\/a> at Cape Station in Utah show the new project can produce power at triple the rate of its Nevada pilot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is now a proven tech. That&#8217;s not a statement you could have made two or three years ago,\u201d Latimer said. \u201cNow, it just comes down to how do we get more of these megawatts on the grid so we have a bigger impact?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This summer, this type of geothermal got one step closer to Americans\u2019 living rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Fervo signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/fervoenergy.com\/fervo-energy-announces-320-mw-power-purchase-agreements-with-southern-california-edison\/\">landmark deal<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sce.com\/\">Southern California Edison<\/a>, one of the country\u2019s largest electric utilities with 15 million customers. It will send the first 70 megawatts of geothermal juice to the grid in 2026. So, SoCal Edison spokesperson Reggie Kumar said adding geothermal makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor California to achieve its decarbonization goals by 2045, the grid must expand faster than ever before. This means we need to take bold actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/articles\/doe-analysis-highlights-opportunities-expand-clean-affordable-geothermal-power\">long-term goal<\/a> is to multiply domestic geothermal capacity nearly 25-fold by 2050 \u2014 to a level that could power more than 65 million homes. The federal government is investing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/biden-harris-administration-invests-60-million-expand-clean-renewable-geothermal-energy\">millions<\/a> in geothermal projects to speed up geothermal\u2019s deployment nationwide. The local geology in southwest Utah makes it a prime spot for tapping underground heat, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/docs\/fy23osti\/84822.pdf\">recent mapping<\/a> from the National Renewable Energy Lab shows potential for enhanced geothermal to work across much of the West and even in some eastern states, such as Mississippi, Iowa and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Geothermal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/11\/08\/1211459899\/a-new-type-of-climate-friendly-energy-is-coming-online-in-the-u-s-southwest\">does currently cost more per megawatt hour<\/a> than wind or solar, but those more-established renewables require big batteries to keep power flowing around the clock. So I think it is a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We won\u2019t know for sure if geothermal can be a reliable utility-scale power source until it actually happens, Varadarajan said, but he\u2019s cautiously optimistic. And if the Fervo project works, he said more companies could begin building additional geothermal projects for other utilities within just a few years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do hope we will have other [renewable energy] options in the next decade, but geothermal is something that can start scaling by the end of this decade,\u201d he said. \u201cThat few years can make an enormous difference for competitiveness [and] for climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enhanced geothermal has potential to scale quickly, in part, because it borrows a lot of tech and know-how from the industry many would like to see it replace: fossil fuels. Fervo is even based in Houston \u2014 Oiltown USA \u2014 and a majority of the company\u2019s employees came from the fossil fuel industry.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-overflow-3-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap overflow\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Scalable with off the shelf technology<\/h3>\n<p>Eric Williams, for example, spent decades working in oil and gas but now oversees safety at the Fervo project in Utah.
