Some of Hera&#8217;s instruments \u2014 designed to survey the impact site of NASA&#8217;s successful <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/nasa-dart-asteroid-mission-worked\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">asteroid-deflection test<\/a> \u2014 snapped the images below. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Farewell, Earth!&#8221; the European Space Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/esa\/status\/1845746747781296561\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" rel=\"noopener\">posted online<\/a>. &#8220;Last week, after we successfully launched our Hera mission, its instruments were switched on for the first time and the asteroid deck was pointed back towards our planet. The aim of the mission is to fully grasp how NASA&#8217;s DART mission (short for <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/nasa-dart-mission-why-double-asteroids\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">Double Asteroid Redirection Test<\/a>), which proved humanity can alter the path of a potentially menacing asteroid, affected the 525-foot-wide (160-meter) asteroid Dimorphos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now that <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/category\/nasa\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a>\u2019s DART mission has impacted the moonlet, Hera will turn the grand-scale experiment into a well-understood and repeatable planetary defense technique,&#8221; the European Space Agency explained. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/biggest-asteroid-impacts-earth\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">Large asteroids<\/a> rarely impact Earth, but when they do, regional to local devastation can ensue. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>The risks of an asteroid impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here are today&#8217;s general risks from asteroids or <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/what-is-a-comet-facts\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-element=\"offer\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" rel=\"noopener\">comets<\/a> both tiny and very large.
