Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, reported that potential regulations would focus on Persian Gulf countries in the interest of national security. The stocks of fellow chipmakers Advanced Micro Devices (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/AMD\" data-ylk=\"slk:AMD;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AMD<\/a>) and Intel (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/INTC\" data-ylk=\"slk:INTC;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">INTC<\/a>) also fell on the news.<\/p>\n<p>Intel declined to comment on the report. Nvidia and AMD did not immediately respond to requests from Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the woes of chip stocks Tuesday was a dismal earnings report from semiconductor equipment supplier ASML (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/ASML\" data-ylk=\"slk:ASML;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ASML<\/a>). The Dutch company \u2014 which sells equipment to chip manufacturers TSMC and Intel \u2014 reported booking orders worth just \u20ac2.6 billion ($2.8 billion), far lower than the \u20ac5.39 billion forecast by Wall Street analysts tracked by Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>The PHLX Semiconductor index (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5ESOX\" data-ylk=\"slk:^SOX;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">^SOX<\/a>) fell 4.4% Tuesday, far underperforming the S&amp;P 500 (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/%5EGSPC\" data-ylk=\"slk:^GSPC;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">^GSPC<\/a>), which was down 0.5% midday.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s decline Tuesday partially reverses a two-week winning streak that saw the stock rally to a new record closing price Monday, nearly eclipsing Apple (<a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/AAPL\" data-ylk=\"slk:AAPL;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AAPL<\/a>) as Wall Street\u2019s most valuable company. Shares closed above $138 Monday, ahead of its previous record of $135.58 in June. Nvidia&#8217;s tear was fueled by news of intense demand for its AI chips and renewed bullishness over AI.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia stock has been more volatile since its 10-for-1 stock split in June, and news of heightened trade tensions focused on the AI chip sector \u2014 which Nvidia leads \u2014 has pushed shares down various times over the past two years. For example, Nvidia shares<a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-10-17\/us-restricts-sale-of-nvidia-made-for-china-chips-in-new-rules\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:experienced a similar decline;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> experienced a similar decline<\/a> this time last year \u2014 when the Biden administration tightened export controls on US chips \u2014 before extending its historic rally.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 640px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:67%\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Nvidia office building in Santa Clara, Calif. While demand for its AI chips is strong in the near term, a potential slowdown in AI spending by Big Tech companies is another cause for concern to investors, in addition to geopolitical risks. <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/nvidia-and-other-chip-stocks-surge-with-no-sign-of-ai-spending-slowdown--for-now-212335257.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:DA Davidson's Gil Luria recently told Yahoo Finance that AI spending could ease as soon as 2025;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">DA Davidson&#8217;s Gil Luria recently told Yahoo Finance that AI spending could ease as soon as 2025<\/a>, which would be bad news for Nvidia shares.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia is set to report earnings on Nov. 19. Wall Street analysts expect the company to report revenues of $33 billion, up 82% from the prior year, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates.
