From there, the pandas left for Washington&#8217;s Dulles International Airport and landed at 9:53 a.m. EDT on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Two FedEx trucks then transported the pandas from the airport to the National Zoo. People cheered when the trucks decorated with giant panda pictures on the side and their police escort pulled into the zoo.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;Something *giant* is coming to Washington, D.C. via the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FedEx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@FedEx<\/a>\u00a0Panda Express,&#8221; the National Zoo said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NationalZoo\/status\/1845927845421305927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">social media post<\/a>\u00a0Monday. &#8220;The Zoo will be closed to the public tomorrow, Oct. 15. China &#8220;has used pandas to pursue diplomatic objectives, a practice termed <a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/IF\/IF12122\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">panda diplomacy,<\/a>&#8221; according to the Congressional Research Service.<\/p>\n<p>China in 2000 sent Mei Xiang and Tian Tian to the National Zoo as part of an agreement with the China Wildlife and Conservation Association. Mei Xiang and Tian Tian were supposed to stay in the U.S. for 10 years, but the agreement was extended several times. The pair of pandas in 2020 had a cub, Xiao Qi Ji.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Xiao Qi Ji and his parents were <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pandas-leaving-washington-dc-return-china-today-smithsonian-national-zoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">returned to China<\/a><\/span> in November of last year. After they left, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/last-pandas-in-us-timetable-return-to-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Zoo Atlanta<\/a><\/span>\u00a0was the only zoo in the U.S. with giant pandas. Their pandas are set to return to China at some point this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then giant pandas returned to the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pandas-back-san-diego-zoo-first-time-since-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">San Diego Zoo<\/a><\/span>\u00a0this summer for the first time since 2019. And in May, first lady Dr. Jill Biden joined Smithsonian officials to announce pandas were coming back to the nation&#8217;s capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bao Li, a 2-year-old male, was born in Sichuan to father An An and mother Bao Bao. Quarantine will allow the zoo to reduce the risk of introducing parasites or disease to other animals.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll then have a few more weeks to settle into their new home before their public debut.
