About 100 American troops will go to Israel to operate the THAAD system, according to the Pentagon, putting U.S. service members closer to the heart of a widening Middle East war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a political message of the United States to Israel that, \u2018We are with you,\u2019\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inss.org.il\/person\/yehoshua-kalisky\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Yehoshua Kalisky<\/a>, a military technology expert at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. \u201cAnd to enemies, it\u2019s: \u2018Don\u2019t.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Here is a look at the THAAD system and what it can do.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-19v2tje eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4f4a495\">What is THAAD?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/missilethreat.csis.org\/system\/thaad\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Terminal High Altitude Area Defense<\/a> system is a mobile surface-to-air interceptor designed to shoot down incoming ballistic missiles. It is categorized as a short-, medium- and intermediate-range interceptor that can strike incoming targets both within the Earth\u2019s atmosphere and above it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Each THAAD battery is made up of five parts: 48 interceptor missiles, six truck-mounted launchers, a radar, a command-and-control platform and 95 soldiers, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/IF\/IF12645\/2\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Congressional Research Service<\/a>. There is no warhead on the missile, which destroys its targets by the force of its impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">There are only <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/content\/dam\/lockheed-martin\/mfc\/documents\/business-area-landing\/2023_THAAD-Fast-Facts.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">nine active THAAD batteries<\/a> in the world, according to its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. In 2019, the latest data available, seven of them were assigned to the U.S. Army, including five at bases in Texas and one each Guam and South Korea. The battery that the Biden administration has ordered to Israel presumably would be among those seven.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Two others are being fielded in the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The Pentagon announced almost a year ago that it was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/22\/world\/middleeast\/patriot-israel-hamas-iran-gaza-eisenhower-pentagon.html\" title=\"\">sending a THAAD battery to the Middle East<\/a> to help protect Israel, but did not specify where it would be.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-19v2tje eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4ffd8f25\">How will it be used?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Because it can reach above the atmosphere, the THAAD should be able to intercept ballistic missiles launched from Iran and Yemen, said Fabian Hinz, a missiles and Middle East expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. It can also shoot down shorter-range missiles launched by Hezbollah, in neighboring Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Iran and its allies have also fired guided cruise missiles and drones, which operate at much lower altitudes and speeds than ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kalisky said the THAAD would be particularly useful in intercepting debris from other missiles that have been downed before it falls to the ground, where it can inflict casualties and damage infrastructure. (He also said the THAAD has an exceptional radar that can detect incoming missiles from farther distances.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Hinz said they would likely serve as another layer of urgently needed air defenses, given that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2024\/10\/03\/world\/israel-iran-lebanon-hezbollah#what-missiles-did-iran-use-to-target-israel-and-why-it-matters\" title=\"\">some Iranian missiles evaded Israeli interceptors<\/a> during a barrage this month. Iran lies more than 500 miles from Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe have seen that the Iranian strategy is to fire large volleys in order to overwhelm Israeli defenses,\u201d Mr. Hinz said. \u201cIf you have additional interception capability, that is quite useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"live-blog-post-content css-19v2tje eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-381a6175\">How is it different from Israel\u2019s other air defense systems?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s largely a matter of range, meaning how far the missile can fly. The THAAD has a range of about 125 miles. Its launchers and command centers can be moved to different sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kalisky compared the THAAD to one of Israel\u2019s main defense systems, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rafael.co.il\/system\/medium-long-range-defense-davids-sling\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">David\u2019s Sling<\/a>, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idf.il\/en\/mini-sites\/israeli-air-force\/new-david-s-sling-anti-missile-system-protects-israel-from-long-range-threats\/#:~:text=Unlike%2C%20the%20mobile%20Iron%20Dome,Israel%20from%20its%20permanent%20location.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stationary weapon at a fixed location<\/a> that can shoot down short- and medium-range ballistic and cruise missiles. It has a range of about 185 miles and is also a \u201chit-to-kill\u201d weapon that downs its targets by flying into it. The David\u2019s Sling is jointly produced by Raytheon and Israeli weapons producer Rafael.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Then there is Israel\u2019s Arrow series, which is produced by Israel Aerospace Industries and Boeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/missilethreat.csis.org\/defsys\/arrow-2\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Arrow 2<\/a> can intercept targets high in the atmosphere, with an altitude of about 30 miles and a range of about 60 miles. It has a fragmentation warhead packed with explosives that can blow up near incoming missiles even if it does not directly hit its targets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/missilethreat.csis.org\/defsys\/arrow-3\/#easy-footnote-bottom-12-382\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Arrow 3<\/a>, another hit-to-kill weapon, can go beyond the atmosphere with a range of up to 1,500 miles. It is one of Israel\u2019s most advanced defenses and was used to counter the Iranian strikes on Oct. 1. Both the Arrow 2 and the Arrow 3 are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/missiledefenseadvocacy.org\/defense-systems\/arrow-israel\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ground-based mobile launchers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">The Iron Dome system is perhaps the best-known of Israel\u2019s air defenses, largely because <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rafael.co.il\/system\/iron-dome\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">it is used more<\/a> than the others. Its short-range interceptors \u2014 just 6 inches wide and 10 feet long \u2014 rely on miniature sensors and computerized guidance to zero in on short-range rockets.
