U.S. airlines received more than $50 billion in government aid during the pandemic travel slump that prohibited share repurchases and dividends, though airlines were still fighting for financial stability.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/LUV\/\">Southwest Airlines<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/26\/southwest-investor-day-proxy-battle-elliott.html\">$2.5 billion share repurchase program<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like other leading airlines and companies, we are initiating a measured, strategic share repurchase program,&#8221; United CEO Scott Kirby said in a note to staff on Tuesday. &#8220;Importantly, my commitment to you is that investing in our people and our business will always be my top priority even while we institute this share repurchase program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more CNBC airline news<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>For the third quarter, United posted revenue of $14.84 billion, up 2.5% from a year earlier and above analyst estimates.
