From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/06\/5-foods-the-communities-with-high-rates-of-living-to-100-eat-often.html\">cookbooks<\/a> to research papers to the hundreds of articles you can access with a quick Google search, the amount of information to digest and advice to take in can get overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>But there are simple approaches you can take and easy changes to implement if you&#8217;re hoping to live to 100.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly two years, I&#8217;ve been reporting on longevity and the lifestyle choices that seem to help people live longer. Here are five habits that stand out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>1. Eat a healthy diet<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Diet is by far the most important factor&#8221; for longevity, Valter Longo who&#8217;s studied longevity for about 20 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/04\/04\/italian-longevity-expert-how-to-eat-for-a-long-healthy-life.html\">told CNBC Make It<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Countless experts who study the world&#8217;s longest-lived communities couldn&#8217;t stress enough how much the foods you eat can affect your lifespan. An eating pattern similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/04\/mediterranean-diet-dos-and-donts-the-best-diet-of-2023.html\">Mediterranean diet<\/a> is what longevity experts recommend the most.<\/p>\n<p>According to Longo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/06\/5-foods-the-communities-with-high-rates-of-living-to-100-eat-often.html\">Dan Buettner<\/a>, the longevity expert who interviews centenarians and visits blue zones, a longevity diet should be mostly plant-based and include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legumes, especially beans<\/li>\n<li>Nuts<\/li>\n<li>Whole grains like oats<\/li>\n<li>No red meat<\/li>\n<li>A healthy amount of vegetables, particularly leafy greens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;I recommended 12 hours of fasting daily. Let&#8217;s say you eat between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. [or] 7 a.m. [and] 7 p.m.&#8221; Longo said. Buettner also eats within a 10- or 12-hour window, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/03\/16\/diet-of-dan-buettner-longevity-expert-who-coined-term-blue-zones.html\">his interview with Make It<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Move your body often<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some longevity experts recommend daily exercise, and others recommend daily movement through low-intensity physical activity.<\/p>\n<p>Strength training twice a week and aerobic exercise three times a week, even for 10 minutes of day, is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/18\/living-to-90-or-100-longevity-tips-and-life-expectancy-calculator.html\">daily practices that increase a person&#8217;s chances of living to 90<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/centenarian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Centenarian Study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In blue zones, the physical activity is a lot less vigorous, but centenarians still move daily, Buettner said in his Netflix documentary, &#8220;Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones.&#8221; Typically, residents of blue zones walk from place to place, build things by hand and tend to their own gardens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/16\/4-things-the-worlds-longest-living-people-do-to-stay-healthy-happy.html\">he said<\/a>, which allows them to engage in low-intensity physical activity every day.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Believe in something<\/h3>\n<p>By the end of 2023, Buettner had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/11\/24\/i-talked-to-263-of-the-worlds-oldest-living-peoplehere-are-their-non-negotiables-for-a-long-happy-life.html\">interviewed 263 centenarians<\/a> in his lifetime. All but five of those centenarians belonged to a faith-based community, he wrote in a Make It article.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People who go to church, temple or a mosque live somewhere between four and fourteen years longer than people who have no religion,&#8221; Buettner said on an episode of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/2EbLaB8kMEhA5ToEtzqc2k?si=943672fec49f4cf8&amp;amp%3Bnd=1&amp;amp%3Bdlsi=a899bb27773642ec&amp;nd=1&amp;dlsi=b994244624f649a8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ten Percent Happier with Dan Harris<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that people who have a faith or life philosophy are also happier than those who don&#8217;t have one, according to Arthur C. Brooks, a leading happiness expert who teaches a free, online course about the joyful feeling at Harvard. When you follow a religion or spiritual practice, it helps you find meaning in life, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/08\/08\/treat-your-happiness-like-an-investment-and-focus-on-these-4-areas.html\">he explained<\/a> in his course.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Maintain positive relationships<\/h3>\n<p>Having positive relationships in your life is the No. 1 thing that can help you live a longer, happier life, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/10\/85-year-harvard-study-found-the-secret-to-a-long-happy-and-successful-life.html\">an 86-year Harvard study<\/a> that&#8217;s still ongoing. But pouring into those connections and strengthening them is just as important, which researchers call &#8220;social fitness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether it&#8217;s a thoughtful question or a moment of devoted attention, it&#8217;s never too late to deepen the connections that matter to you,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/10\/85-year-harvard-study-found-the-secret-to-a-long-happy-and-successful-life.html\">wrote<\/a> Marc Schulz and Dr. Robert Waldinger, directors of the Harvard study, in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Catering to social connections is also a value of centenarians in blue zones. &#8220;People in the Blue Zones make their partners a priority, nurture their relationships and invest in them,&#8221; Buettner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/16\/4-things-the-worlds-longest-living-people-do-to-stay-healthy-happy.html\">said in his documentary<\/a>. &#8220;Having the right friends, that is the biggest secret to help these people in Blue Zones do the right things and avoid the wrong things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>5. Prioritize your purpose and lifelong learning<\/h3>\n<p>In Okinawa, Japan, one of the blue zones with many centenarians, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/07\/09\/10-rules-of-ikigai-from-authors-of-the-japanese-secret-for-longevity.html\">ikigai<\/a>, which loosely translates to &#8220;the happiness of always being busy&#8221; is a huge value. So much so that a book called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/ikigai-h-ctor-garc-a\/1127136457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life<\/a>&#8221; is one of the most popular books about longevity and an international bestseller.<\/p>\n<p>Ikigai is all about finding your purpose and committing to it daily. And that&#8217;s exactly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/06\/24\/dan-buettner-9-things-people-in-blue-zones-have-in-common.html\">what Buettner recommends<\/a> doing for longevity: &#8220;People with a sense of purpose live about eight years longer than rudderless people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/08\/21\/7-practices-that-lead-to-happiness-and-good-health-from-harvard-study.html\">seven practices<\/a> researchers of the 86-year-long Harvard Study of Adult Development discovered that led to &#8220;being happy and well in older age rather than ending up sad and sick,&#8221; Brooks&#8217; happiness course explained. One of those practices is fostering a growth mindset by investing in lifelong learning and education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Aging happy and well, instead of sad and sick, is at least under some personal control,&#8221; Dr. George E.
