facial swelling last year was caused by undercooked bear meat served at a mountain affair in North Carolina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7340a4.htm#print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a new report from the Center for Disease Control<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The undercooked meat infected 10 of the 22 attendees of the November 2023 affair, who reported consuming the bear with Trichinellosis, more commonly referred to as brain worms. <\/p>\n<p>It is a rare parasitic disease known to cause a fever, severe muscle aches, and swelling around the eyes. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A brown bear standing on top of two rocks in a river.  <span the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn increasing percentage of recent cases are associated with consumption of wild game meat.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Meat tainted with roundworm larvae, which are commonly found in carnivorous and omnivorous animals, cause Trichinellosis, according to the CDC. <\/p>\n<p>The larvae \u201cinvade the small bowel mucosa and develop into adult worms.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The brain worms used to be more common in the United States, but saw a sharp decline after pig-raising practices were refined throughout the late 20th century, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/exhibits\/speccoll\/exhibits\/show\/parasitic-diseases-with-econom\/parasitic-diseases-with-econom\/trichinosis\/trichinellosis--trichinosis--t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the Department of Agriculture<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Eight of the 10 people who reported falling ill went to hospitals for symptoms that included \u201cheadache, swelling of eyes and face, nausea, and\/or diarrhea,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>It is a rare parasitic was staged in November in Swain County, with all those who contracted Trichinellosis living in Swain, Cherokee and Graham counties, the North Carolina Division of Public Health reported.<\/p>\n<p>The infected ranged from 10 to 40 years old. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A very large brown bear stalking in the woods. <span class=\"credit\">National Park Service\/Mega<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In May 2024, six people attending a family reunion contracted Trichinellosis after eating <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/25\/us-news\/six-people-eat-undercooked-bear-meat-contract-brain-worms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">undercooked bear kabobs<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The same happened in Canada in 2022 when another six cases were identified \u2014 except only four members of the party consumed the bear meat. <\/p>\n<p>Two of the patients only ate vegetables that day, but it had been cross-contaminated by the meat, according to the CDC report. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async
