Researchers have discovered a distant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/23\/world\/distant-galaxy-wolfe-disk-scn-trnd\/index.html\">disc galaxy<\/a> that has surprisingly similar characteristics to our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/21\/science\/hypervelocity-star-escape-milky-way\/index.html\">Milky Way<\/a>, and it could change our understanding of how galaxies form.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2aickif0000356mpurw3zqz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The galaxy, which has been named REBELS-25, is far more orderly than the existing science suggests it should be for its age, according to research led by astronomers from Leiden University in the Netherlands.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2aik59o000g356mymbt1onu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            REBELS-25 is much younger than our galaxy, but it already shares its rotation and structure, rather than appearing clumpy and chaotic like other early galaxies, the researchers said in a statement published October 7.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cm2bmrond0018356mfdxgkjzq@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6625\" data-original-height=\"1325\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-1240756537.jpg?c=original\" \u201cAccording to our understanding of galaxy formation, we expect most early galaxies to be small and messy looking,\u201d Jacqueline Hodge, an astronomer at Leiden University and co-author of the study, said in the statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2aihf3j000d356mx76c7vbp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Early galaxies tend to join together and develop smoother shapes incredibly slowly, with our Milky Way taking billions of years to develop tidy structures, the researchers said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bl9e9k0003356mu1rc1isa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The light reaching Earth from REBELS-25 was emitted just 700 million years after the universe was formed 13.8 billion years ago, a surprisingly short amount of time for it to have become so orderly, they said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ainxf5000m356mypy036zb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSeeing a galaxy with such similarities to our own Milky Way, that is strongly rotation-dominated, challenges our understanding of how quickly galaxies in the early Universe evolve into the orderly galaxies of today\u2019s cosmos,\u201d Lucie Rowland, a doctoral student at Leiden University and first author of the study, said in the statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bl9mfb0007356mmjluqyu2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rotation and structure of the galaxy were observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope in northern Chile.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ait62g000s356mt48gm9u5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team also found data that hinted at even more developed features, such as spiral arms, and they plan to carry out more observations to confirm whether they in fact exist.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2aiw5g5000v356m4lokcukm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFinding further evidence of more evolved structures would be an exciting discovery,\u00a0as it would be the most distant galaxy with such structures observed to date,\u201d Rowland said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bjde230006356m67elz2lj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Andrew Blain, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Leicester, who was not involved in the paper, said REBELS-25 is \u201ca bit unusual,\u201d but \u201cit\u2019s not a revolution.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bm18di000g356meg3iq0zp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blain highlighted the role of ALMA in finding a real example of a kind of galaxy that had previously only been produced in simulations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bjddeo0003356mazb55ex2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWithout ALMA there\u2019s been no ability to identify an example \u2013 both because individual examples would have been too faint to detect in a reasonable time, and a large enough sample of candidates could not be searched,\u201d he told CNN. \u201cALMA also reveals details finer than earlier telescopes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bm1t87000j356m8ms9o4m7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blain said more research is needed before scientists change their understanding of galaxy formation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bjdev90008356moa5h0rkg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA question would be are they very rare, or does every\u00a0galaxy\u00a0go through a phase like this,\u201d he said. \u201cIf they\u2019re common, then models will have to be tweaked.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bm383e000n356mwlib3llj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dave Clements, a reader in astrophysics at Imperial College London, who was not involved in the paper, said it \u201cis quite a surprise\u201d to find a galaxy like REBELS-25.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bjeaav000k356mcn9jwtpq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe universe back then is thought to be a lot more chaotic, with\u00a0galaxy\u00a0interactions and mergers expected to disrupt the relatively fragile structure of a disk. And yet that\u2019s what REBELS-25 looks like,\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bm83qz000w356mp3xq625h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201dIs it just a very unusual\u00a0galaxy, that\u2019s led an unexpectedly quiet life up to when we see it, or are these observations telling us that the early stages of\u00a0galaxy\u00a0formation don\u2019t work the way we think?
