{"id":114972,"date":"2024-10-16T23:55:48","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T16:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=114972"},"modified":"2024-10-16T23:55:48","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T16:55:48","slug":"ftc-moves-to-take-the-frustration-out-of-canceling-subscriptions-for-consumers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=114972","title":{"rendered":"FTC moves to take the &#8216;frustration&#8217; out of canceling subscriptions for consumers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\">The Federal Trade Commission is announcing a finalized rule to make it easier for people to cancel subscriptions and memberships they just don\u2019t want anymore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s called click to cancel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">FTC Commissioner Lina Khan said in an interview Tuesday that the rule is designed so that if consumers signed up online, they must also be able to cancel on the same website in the same number of steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In August, the administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/08\/12\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-launches-new-effort-to-crack-down-on-everyday-headaches-and-hassles-that-waste-americans-time-and-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced it was moving forward on the proposed rule<\/a> as part of its \u201cTime Is Money\u201d crackdown on a host of consumer-oriented hassles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Khan said the agency now gets around 70 complaints every day related to frustrations around canceling subscriptions \u2014\u00a0a number she said has increased \u201cdramatically\u201d from just a few years ago.<strong> <\/strong>When the proposed rule was announced last year, Khan said, the agency got about 16,000 comments expressing how canceling subscriptions had become a headache at best.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOver recent years, we\u2019ve seen increasingly that some firms make it extraordinarily easy to sign up but absurdly difficult to cancel,\u201d she said Tuesday. \u201cAnd Americans end up paying more money and wasting their time as a result. And so that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to put an end to with this rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She described many current cancellation systems, which sometimes feature either unhelpful automated phone systems or endless transfers between agents, as a \u201cdoom loop.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s this real fundamental frustration and this feeling that there can be this indignity of being a consumer, and that\u2019s what we want to address and make right,\u201d Khan said. \u201cAll people want here is some fairness and some honesty, and that\u2019s what this rule will do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the country\u2019s largest business lobbying group, has said the FTC\u2019s proposal would in effect \u201cmicromanage business practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBusinesses succeed by being responsive to customers and have a far better track record of customer service, streamlined paperwork and prompt response times than the federal government,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamber.com\/antitrust\/u-s-chamber-time-is-money-initiative-will-cost-the-american-people-more-time-and-money?orgid=&amp;utm_att1=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it said in a statement online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Khan said those arguments don\u2019t hold up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAt the end of the day, if a business is dependent on tricking or trapping people into subscriptions, that\u2019s not a good business model, and that\u2019s not one that we should stand for,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Khan and the FTC have already taken legal action against Amazon\u2019s Prime division over accusations that it is luring customers into subscriptions that the FTC alleges are extraordinarily difficult to cancel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Amazon has denied wrongdoing. The suit is scheduled to go to trial next summer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Haley Nelson told NBC News she was a victim of Planet Fitness\u2019 cancellation system. Nelson, a Minnesota resident, said she signed up for the gym membership but ended up using it only one time after she decided the facility nearest her was too busy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But when she went to cancel, she learned she would have to do so in person \u2014 which she said she didn\u2019t have the time or desire to do.
