Around the country, college administrators were rapidly expanding D.E.I. programs. They believed that vigorous D.E.I. efforts would allow traditionally underrepresented students to thrive on campus \u2014 and improve learning for students from all backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent years, as D.E.I. programs came under withering attack, Michigan has only doubled down on D.E.I., holding itself out as a model for other schools. By one estimate, the university has built the largest D.E.I. bureaucracy of any big public university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/16\/magazine\/dei-university-michigan.html\" title=\"\">examination by The Times found that Michigan\u2019s expansive \u2014 and expensive \u2014 D.E.I. program<\/a> has struggled to achieve its central goals even as it set off a cascade of unintended consequences.<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here are some key takeaways from the Magazine\u2019s article on Michigan\u2019s D.E.I. experiment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-2upsz0 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1a21a15a\">Michigan has poured a staggering quarter of a billion dollars into D.E.I.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Striving to reach \u201cevery individual on campus,\u201d Michigan has invested nearly 250 million dollars into D.E.I. since 2016, according to an internal presentation I obtained. Every university \u201cunit\u201d \u2014 from the medical school down to the archives \u2014 is required to have a D.E.I. plan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The number of employees who work in D.E.I.-related offices or have \u201cdiversity,\u201d \u201cequity\u201d or \u201cinclusion\u201d in their job titles reached 241 last year, according to an analysis by Mark J. Perry, an emeritus professor of finance at the university\u2019s Flint campus.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-2upsz0 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2311bb43\">Michigan has struggled to improve Black enrollment \u2014 and students overall feel less included, not more.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The percentage of Black students, currently around 5 percent, remained largely stagnant as Michigan\u2019s overall enrollment rose \u2014 and in a state where 14 percent of residents are Black.
