CW entertainment chief Brad Schwartz expected to succeed him, a person familiar with the matter says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe decision is a surprising one, with Miller signing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/the-cw-contract-dennis-miller-2027-1235557743\/\">multi-year contract extension<\/a> last year that would have kept him atop the network through 2027. Miller will exit his role at the end of the month, and will stay on as an advisor through the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMiller had been a big driver of The CW\u2019s push into sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/liv-golf-very-close-tv-deal-the-cw-1235302293\/\">beginning with LIV golf <\/a>last year, with college football and basketball, NASCAR, and WWE NXT also joining its lineup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve had a front row seat during a remarkable 11-year run with Nexstar and enjoyed navigating this period of significant transformation for the network,\u201d said Miller in a statement. \u201cWith some of the highest ratings The CW has seen in years and long-term contracts with an array of premium live sports in place, the future of The CW looks very promising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSchwartz, meanwhile, has been transforming The CW\u2019s programming slate to be more cost efficient so the company can hit its profitability targets. When Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/cw-nexstar-future-deal-sale-terms-1235266033\/\">acquired the company<\/a> (for basically nothing) in 2022, it outlined a plan to make it profitable by 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m confident that under Brad\u2019s leadership, The CW won\u2019t miss a beat,\u201d Nexstar networks president Sean Compton wrote to staff Wednesday. \u201cWith the great team he\u2019s helped to assemble and the new programming starting to resonate with viewers, The CW is poised for even more success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/cw-brad-schwartz-interview-all-american-walker-profitability-1235901302\/\">interview with <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> earlier this year, Schwartz indicated that the company was making progress on that goal, but declined to commit to the 2025 timeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve improved our earnings by $100 million this year. I think we\u2019ve improved our earnings by over $200 million in two years. So this team is really hitting on all cylinders,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had three consecutive quarters of ratings growth. And we\u2019re doing it more efficiently and we\u2019re doing it with a smaller team. And it\u2019s kind of us against titans. We\u2019re the underdog, and it\u2019s all going really well. So I think if we continue on this track, and we play a little Moneyball and put really good content on the air and do it efficiently and keep growing our ratings \u2014 and now that we\u2019ve added, you know, an incredible amount of sports, 500 hours of sports from zero \u2014 it\u2019s all kind of pushing us in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe were fortunate when Dennis agreed to move from Nexstar\u2019s Board to lead the transformation of The CW,\u201d said Perry Sook, Nexstar\u2019s Chairman and CEO. \u201cDuring his tenure, he installed a new leadership team at The CW, and they have broadened the appeal of its programming and enhanced the value of its affiliations for both Nexstar and our partners. With The CW now well positioned for continued success, we\u2019re pleased to let Dennis move on to new challenges. We are grateful for his guidance on Nexstar\u2019s Board and at the helm of The CW, and we wish him the very best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn an email to CW employees Wednesday, Miller wrote that with a \u201cclear path to profitability,\u201d \u201cnow is the perfect time to hand the reins over to my longtime colleague and friend Brad Schwartz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cYou have all\u00a0been a meaningful part of an important transformation for The CW,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWhile change at times, can be bumpy and uncomfortable, it\u2019s the only path forward in today\u2019s media environment.\u00a0 I\u2019m lucky to have gotten to know so many of you along the way and will miss the\u00a0regular interaction, debates, discussions, and ultimate camaraderie\u00a0we built together.\u00a0After serving eight years on the Board of Nexstar and two years overseeing The CW,\u00a0I believe\u00a0you are now in an enviable position to continue building an incredibly valuable fifth broadcast network.\u00a0 A network\u00a0of which you can all be quite proud.
