{"id":115085,"date":"2024-10-17T06:53:57","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T23:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=115085"},"modified":"2024-10-17T06:53:57","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T23:53:57","slug":"menendez-brothers-case-lyle-and-erik-menendez-await-a-decision-that-could-see-them-released-from-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=115085","title":{"rendered":"Menendez brothers case: Lyle and Erik Menendez await a decision that could see them released from prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bxcw0l000mtboxd9sl784i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Relatives\u00a0of Lyle and Erik Menendez on Wednesday made impassioned pleas<strong> <\/strong>for their release from prison after more than 30 years as the Los Angeles County district attorney weighs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/15\/us\/menendez-brothers-district-attorney-letter\/index.html\">new evidence<\/a>\u00a0in the murder of their parents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cbf7s100013b6mmhdfyu8c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than two dozen family members announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justiceforerikandlyle.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coalition <\/a>urging authorities to review the case and to either throw out their convictions and hold a new trial or resentence them in light of evidence they said demonstrated the brothers were victims of abuse at the hands of their father.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j00123b6mslf3yhjo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 1996, the Menendez brothers were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting deaths of their parents, Jose and Kitty, in their Beverly Hills home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j00133b6mxybgxcmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although they\u2019ve never denied killing their parents, both men maintained during their trial that they acted in self-defense and suffered years of physical and sexual abuse from their father.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cbhj8400073b6mwmijohzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anamaria Baralt, niece of Jos\u00e9 Menendez, told reporters Wednesday, \u201cIf Lyle and Erik\u2019s case were heard today, with the understanding we now have about abuse and PTSD, there is no doubt in my mind that their sentencing would have been very different.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cc3sp900003b6moef20e2q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Baralt read a statement from Terry Baralt, Jose Menendez\u2019s sister: \u201cI implore the district attorney\u2019s office to end our prolonged suffering and release Lyle and Erik back to our family. Thirty-five years is such a long time. My prayer is that I live long enough to see my nephews again and to hug them once more.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j00143b6menwjkzap@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Attorneys for the brothers have also argued that the judge overseeing the 1996 case did not allow much of the defense\u2019s evidence of abuse to be presented to the jury. The lawyers and relatives of the brothers said they were vilified as murderers rather than being seen as victims of a brutal predator.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j00153b6mevz3x2y6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2023, attorneys representing the Menendez brothers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/05\/us\/menendez-brothers-new-evidence-claims\/index.html\">filed a petition<\/a> that argued they should be granted relief from their prison sentences based on new allegations that speak to\u00a0Jose Menendez\u2019s alleged pattern of sexual abuse, and <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25223245\/letter-from-erik-menendez-to-andy-cano.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter Erik Menendez wrote <\/a>to a cousin that alludes to abuse he endured. Attorneys also pointed to a sworn statement by former Menudo boy band member, Roy Rossell\u00f3, who alleged Lyle and Erik\u2019s father sexually assaulted him in the 1980s. Jos\u00e9 Menendez was a record company executive at the time.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ccj7dp00023b6mjtcd87bu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, Joan VanderMolen, Kitty Menendez\u2019s sister, told reporters: \u201cI had no idea the extent of the abuse they suffered at the hands of my brother-in-law. None of us did. We know that abuse has long effects, and victims of trauma sometimes act in ways that are very difficult to understand\u2026 The whole world was not ready to hear that boys could be raped.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cd0m7s00003b6mpaq2g3v6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brian Andersen Jr., nephew of Kitty Menendez, said the brothers \u201care no longer a threat to society.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cd238800053b6m17o9jxgh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey tried to protect themselves the only way they knew how. Instead of being seen as victims, they were vilified,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j001a3b6m7hkomwei@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Los Angeles District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/03\/us\/prosecutors-review-new-evidence-menendez-brothers-murder-conviction\/index.html\">George Gasc\u00f3n<\/a> is weighing resentencing the brothers based on evidence filed in the 2023 petition. He announced earlier this month there is no question the brothers committed the murders, but that his office is reviewing the evidence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cbhwqu000b3b6mshiuczjj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Joan VanderMolen said the actions of the brothers were \u201cthe desperate response of two boys trying to survive the unspeakable cruelty of their father.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cblv23000h3b6m6q4xui4i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey were just children. Jose was shot six times, and Kitty was shot ten times, including a shot to her face after Erik reloaded,\u201d the attorney, Kathy Cady, a retired prosecutor, said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c8as4f000b3b6m83tbutu3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Andersen was never informed that Gasc\u00f3n had reassigned the case,\u00a0nor was he told about a news conference in which the district attorney announced a second look at it, according to Cady, who said the prosecutor has not responded to her requests for a meeting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c89f2t00053b6mb8qseq5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMr. Andersen, like all victims\u2019 families, has a Constitutional right to be informed, to have his voice heard, and to have his opinions considered in any decision about the case,\u201d Cady said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2cclar200083b6mj5p3deu7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After Wednesday\u2019s news conference, attorneys for the Menendez brothers did not respond to questions about relatives opposed to their release.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c8dm4q000e3b6mm71gx9gg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has reached out to Gasc\u00f3n for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j001b3b6mx6i5y3r1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Sunday, Gasc\u00f3n <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/15\/us\/menendez-brothers-district-attorney-letter\/index.html\">posted an image<\/a> on social media of the handwritten, undated letter the Menendez attorneys submitted as a part of their petition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j001c3b6m23ypgexi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the letter, Erik Menendez wrote, \u201cI\u2019ve been trying to avoid dad. Its still happening Andy but its worse for me now.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c0ryih000g3b6m9vy2qvtl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He continued, \u201cI never know when its going to happen and its driving me crazy. Every night I stay up thinking he might come in. I need to put it out of my mind.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c0y0jc000u3b6m17wl1spk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI know what you said before but I\u2019m afraid. You just don\u2019t know dad like I do. Hes crazy!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j001d3b6m7dnw2gh8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The image of the letter, which is in the public record, has since been deleted from Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s social media accounts \u2013 but the district attorney addressed the potential significance of it in an interview with ABC that aired Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2by919j001e3b6md0awvsb8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The letter \u201cis all about the abuse which was the cornerstone of their defense,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n said. He told ABC his office is expected to make a decision on the Menendez brothers\u2019 sentence sometime this month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c13ey500003b6mwa9ss0g3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The case has reemerged following last month\u2019s release of the Netflix series,\u201cMonsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.\u201d Netflix also\u00a0this month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/08\/entertainment\/menendez-brothers-netflix-documentary\/index.html\">released a documentary<\/a>\u00a0on the Menendez case featuring both men discussing what led to the murders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c15ay000023b6mcpclmd4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Former Los Angeles County prosecutor Loni Coombs told CNN\u2019s Jim Acosta on Wednesday that Gasc\u00f3n has said publicly the documentary has generated a lot of phone calls to his office about new evidence in the case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c1lieb00053b6ms5tlypfy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat new evidence motion had been sitting on his desk for over a year, but it wasn\u2019t until all the attention and the spotlight came from this documentary that he now steps out and says, \u2018I\u2019m going to look at this,\u2019\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c1lk7z000b3b6m5nw366rp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Society has changed the way it views sexual abuse against boys, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c1sso0000e3b6m3u747kcm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe understand it better.
