Dozens more were injured.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-fuel-truck-collision-e082a840da51f7078dc2a54aed09ea92\">Deadly tanker accidents<\/a><\/span> are common in Nigeria, Africa\u2019s most populous country, which lacks an efficient railway system to transport cargo. People often salvage fuel with cups and buckets \u2014 especially because of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-fuel-subsidy-oil-hardship-677a2a75d07b2c0b4e866b0d9bd68211\">soaring fuel prices<\/a><\/span>, which have tripled since the government ended costly gas subsidies last year.<\/p>\n<p>The latest accident occurred at midnight in northern Jigawa state\u2019s Majiya town when the tanker driver lost control on a highway, police spokesperson Lawan Adam said. Residents rushed to the scene before the \u201cmassive inferno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the bodies were unrecognizable, emergency services said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose to 140 people were put in a mass grave, apart from people buried in other places,\u201d the head of the National Emergency Management Agency in the region, Nura Abdullahi, told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Most other victims were \u201cburned to ashes\u201d at the scene, said Dr. Haruna Mairiga, head of the Jigawa emergency services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they knew (about the danger), they wouldn\u2019t have gone to fetch (the fuel),\u201d Mairiga said.<\/p>\n<p>But resident Sani Umar told local Channels Television the fire spread so quickly that many couldn\u2019t escape. \u201cPeople were running in all directions, screaming for help,\u201d Umar said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,500 accidents involving fuel tankers occurred in Nigeria in 2020, resulting in 535 deaths, according to Nigeria\u2019s Federal Road Safety Corps. In many cases, there are no prosecutions and victims or their families are not compensated, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>At least 48 people were killed in September when a fuel tanker collided with another truck in north-central Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The latest accident revived questions about the implementation of safety measures and traffic regulations in the West African country.<\/p>\n<p>Many tankers are not designed according to international best practices to avoid spillage during accidents, said Timothy Iwuagwu, president of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria.
