But of course, it\u2019s going to be important to follow these patients for a longer period of time.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf00093b6mg96g8ikc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/hodgkin-lymphoma.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">originates in white blood cells called lymphocytes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hodgkins-lymphoma\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affecting the lymphatic system<\/a>, which is part of the body\u2019s immune system.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000a3b6mlzkgec8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The American Cancer Society estimates that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/hodgkin-lymphoma\/about\/key-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 8,000 cases<\/a> will be diagnosed in the United States this year, and about 900 people will die from the disease. Hodgkin lymphoma can develop at any age, but it\u2019s most common in early adulthood. The average age at diagnosis is is 39, and it\u2019s the most common cancer diagnosed in adolescents ages 15 to 19.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000c3b6m68iwn9y2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new study included nearly 1,000 people who were at least 12 years old and newly diagnosed with stage III or IV Hodgkin lymphoma that had previously been untreated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000d3b6m89btdi9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Between July 2019 and October 2022, the patients were randomly assigned to receive one of two treatment regimens; 496 patients were assigned to receive the antibody drug brentuximab vedotin along with the chemotherapy drugs doxorubicin, vinblastine and dacarbazine, while 498 others received nivolumab along with that same trio of chemotherapies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000e3b6mxu2lqywe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The patients received the treatments intravenously on the first day and then about two weeks later within a 28-day cycle. This was repeated for six cycles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000f3b6mr25knnr3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The patients were based at 256 sites across the United States and Canada. One of the sponsors of the trial was Bristol-Myers Squibb, which makes nivolumab and supplied the drug for the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000g3b6mb796c9a2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A combination of chemotherapies has been the standard treatment for advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma for decades, but the researchers watched each patient closely to analyze how they responded to the drug combinations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000h3b6mhmyprm0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers found that the nivolumab treatment regimen significantly improved survival compared with the brentuximab vedotin regimen. About two years after starting treatment, 92% of patients in the nivolumab group survived without relapse and without seeing the cancer progress, compared with 83% of those in the brentuximab vedotin group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000i3b6mb9op7d95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These patients who survived without cancer progression also did not need radiation therapy, which can result in significant side effects, such as the risk of additional cancers or fertility problems. In the study, only seven patients overall received radiation therapy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000j3b6m5n537kbf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers noted that there were more adverse side effects in the brentuximab vedotin group compared with the nivolumab group, but a condition called neutropenia \u2013 in which the body has low levels of a type of white blood cell \u2013 was more prevalent in the nivolumab group. Neutropenia occurred in 56% of patients taking nivolumab versus 34% of those who got the brentuximab vedotin treatment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000k3b6m483qxjig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe one side effect that we saw that seemed higher in the nivolumab arm was neutropenia, and that\u2019s low white blood counts that can result in an increased risk of infection,\u201d Friedberg said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2c7egew00003b6mhub72947@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers knew that neutropenia may be a risk with brentixuimab, so more than than 90% of the patients given that treatment also received a \u201cgrowth factor\u201d medication to help evade neutropenia as a side effect. In the nivolumab group, only 50% of patients got that \u201cgrowth factor\u201d support.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000l3b6mun4efk4l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo it\u2019s really not surprising that we\u2019d see a slightly higher risk of neutropenia,\u201d Friedberg said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000m3b6mgtbt6kek@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers found that, overall, the nivolumab approach had a better side-effect profile, with fewer patients stopping treatment early, fewer deaths during treatment and a low incidence of immune-related toxic effects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000n3b6mg8hw3pp2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There were seven deaths from any cause in the nivolumab group, among which three were during treatment, compared with 14 in the brentuximab vedotin group, among which eight were during treatment, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000o3b6mkchn3qt3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn the context of a disease in which a high proportion of patients are cured with standard therapy and the bar to change practice is set high, the improvement in efficacy and in the risk of adverse events was clinically meaningful,\u201d the researchers wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000p3b6me48g0re2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the study followed patients for only two years, the researchers plan to continue to monitor them and provide updates, Friedberg said. The researchers hope the US Food and Drug Administration soon will determine whether nivolumab should be added as a standard treatment for stage III or IV Hodgkin lymphoma, and they plan to start the formal process to ask the agency to expand the approval of nivolumab in the near future.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000q3b6mwbgswowr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nivolumab, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opdivo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold under the brand name Opdivo<\/a>, has been approved by the FDA to be included in treatment regimens for many other types of cancer, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/resources-information-approved-drugs\/fda-approves-neoadjuvantadjuvant-nivolumab-resectable-non-small-cell-lung-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small cell lung cancer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/resources-information-approved-drugs\/fda-approves-nivolumab-adjuvant-treatment-stage-iibc-melanoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">melanoma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/resources-information-approved-drugs\/fda-approves-nivolumab-adjuvant-treatment-urothelial-carcinoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urothelial carcinoma<\/a>. It\u2019s unclear how much a nivolumab treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma may cost, but an infusion of 240 milligrams \u2013 the maximum dosage given to the patients in the new trial \u2013<strong> <\/strong>every two weeks has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmspricinginformation.com\/opdivo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list price of $7,635 per infusion<\/a>, according to Bristol Myers Squibb\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmspricinginformation.com\/opdivo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pricing information<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000r3b6mxo8zscaq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re in the midst of an immunotherapy revolution in the treatment of cancer,\u201d Friedberg said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000s3b6mtutca0on@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor decades, people tried and failed, and within the last six to 10 years, we\u2019ve seen dramatic changes in not just Hodgkin lymphoma but many more common cancers like lung cancer and melanoma,\u201d he said. \u201cUnfortunately, for many of the more common cancers, although immunotherapy seems to work, it\u2019s not a definitive cure, and a lot of the research now is looking to join immunotherapy with other standard approaches to see if that one-two punch, so to speak, may ultimately be curative.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm2bzv9rl00163b6m612tot8u@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-change-in-the-standard-of-care\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        \u2018A change in the standard of care\u2019<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000u3b6mehvyxl9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many insurance companies have been approving the use of nivolumab with chemotherapies as an off-label treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma, said Dr. Ann LaCasce, director of the Dana-Farber\/Mass General Brigham Fellowship in Hematology\/Oncology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000v3b6me2nnrxru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe publication of this randomized clinical trial provides high level evidence supporting the regimen\u2019s use,\u201d LaCasce, a lymphoma specialist who was not involved in the new study, wrote in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000w3b6mzmnum2ed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is a very important study that leads to a change in the standard of care for pediatric and adult patients in the U.S. with advanced stage classic Hodgkin lymphoma,\u201d she said. \u201cThe trial was a successful collaboration between adult and pediatric investigators and included a diverse group of patients with respect to age, race, and ethnicity. This sets the stage for future collaborative studies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm2bzv1o200143b6mnl29knaf@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__standard\">\n<h3 class=\"factbox_inline-small__title\" data-editable=\"title\">\n    Get CNN Health&#8217;s weekly newsletter<br \/>\n  <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000y3b6m2nxx2vuo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The traditional approach to Hodgkin lymphoma treatment has emphasized the use of chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy to kill cancer cells, Dr. James Armitage of the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Dr. Dan Longo of Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital wrote in an editorial published alongside the new study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2bzuxkf000z3b6mwj8yj0sw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHowever, insights in the field of cancer biology identified other potential approaches to cancer treatment in general and Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma in particular.
